No jim... ive had it twice.. its a complete no brain er when you think the work it does.. working hours and the seal life.. for 25 odd quid it really is silly not to change it.. a leaky pump onto a rubber belt is not always found until the belt pops.. and takes your cam followers out or on xud cam shaft.

Since I had one fail on an XM I have always changed them but I had a long run of getting away with it. The Hdi ones are actually easier to change than on the XM as you can see all the bolt holes.

My first c5 got the timing belt at 80k without a waterpump and it was fine until well after I sold it, and Kerri s astra got a belt only at 80 ish k now at 125k with no problem. That's 105k she has done in that car with no breakdowns and only minor things for mots. Sorry to be saying on here that a poxhall is a good car. Very boring to drive, but she likes it because it is a good one.

For my 2 penneth, there was s good guide with pics by IIRC Les Iddon on the Yahoo Groups Xantia site using the Tippex method. I would also advise anyone changing their cam belt to change the composite crankshaft pulley if fitted. Mine lasted 125K necessitating a repeat operation and the inconvenience of a recovery home which took the best part of a day!

Unfortunately this is not for a timing belt, but it's still a quick belt changing trick..

I replaced the crankshaft pulley on my Black Xantia Hdi at 294k, not because it had failed but because it was making noises and obviously on the way out.

Going slightly off topic, this leads on to the subject of component life and preventative maintenance. I remember (and it still may be the case) that service schedules included a drain, flush and renewal of antifreeze every 2 yrs/24k miles. All flexible brake hoses and rubber seals to be replaced every 3 yrs/36k miles etc. Did it get done? Maybe at the dealers but probably not once the car got onto the 2nd or 3rd owner, I certainly didn't do it.

However I do my cam belts every 100k miles (almost) without fail, why? I supposed its because a failure will wreak the engine yet the outcome of brake failure could be considerably worse. I say almost because it occurred to me that one of the kid's Fiestas is supposed to have a belt change at 10 yrs / 100k miles. Its now 18 years old and 90k miles and hasn't had a belt change.

I also do the oil and filters religiously in line with service requirements but everything else gets done when it breaks, wears out or is obviously deteriorating to the point where its not performing properly or I'm not happy with it.

What components do other people replace just in case rather than when they break/wear out/ deteriorate beyond the acceptable?

I change the oil, filters, coolant and brake fluid as per service schedule. The rest of it gets done in the same way as you - when it breaks or is obviously worn out.

Go out on a Wed Night to the Local Nightclub and get yourself a MILF, it will cost you about 5 Gin & Tonics and some small talk about your "feelings" and how much you like Cats
