Re: No clutch, then no engine.
Gearbox will come out the bottom. Not sure if the Xsara 110 uses the ML5 box which is a bit bigger and heavier than the BE4 used on lesser versions. I don't remember too much difficulty in getting the box in/out on the 306 we did, but that was a BE4 box. Pretty sure you will find that the engine will start with a new sensor in - it may not run for long, but long enough at least to know it is OK (sure it will be!!). If it does, then remove the new sensor from the box before pulling it so you don't wreck the sensor getting the box on/off!!

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
Thanks for your support!
Oh yes, I'll whip the sensor straight back out! (It'll help me to remember to check it anyway)
Gearbox out the bottom? That does make sense looking at it. I've got access to a hoist so weight not a prob, just the dimensions of it. Much in the way of subframes etc to remove?
Seen a Transmech kit on Eurocar parts on offer for £61, looks tempting.

Ah ok.
Next one up is an LUK for £91. Worth the extra 30 notes then?

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
I have no direct experience of them, only what has been written here and autoshite.
I had a Valeo one in my previous C5 but didn't keep it long enough to unearth any faults.
Current one is beginning to slip so will no doubt want one before too long and will insist on a Valeo or LUK.
I won't be getting my hands dirty though

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
Can't say I blame you, esp if it's an outdoor job right now. I had to "subby" out the C5 cambelt job last month so I feel I need to pay my dues on this one
Been a while since I took a gearbox out AND put it back...
No Haynes knocking about either.

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
When I had my last clutch done at a non Citroen dealer the garaged sourced the DMF from a motor factor co. but the clutch kit was actually cheaper from Citroen. Clutch has since been done again after only 6000 miles under warranty from Citroen due to slipping as a result of the crank case oil leak issue and separately the steering rack leak issue. Seriously considering an automatic next (what am I talking about - I've spent a fortune on this car!), but had 2 bad previous experiences with 2 XM Prestiges (both 2.0 Petrol Turbo) that were automatics - both gearboxes went after they started 'slipping' and gave out very quickly.

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
I think you will struggle to get it out the top unless you are taking the engine and gearbox out as a unit. When I did the Xsara I got the front of car as high as I could on axle stands and dropped the box down. I then used my engine hoist and straps to pull the box back up into position, but this was made easier by having an assistant to operate the hoist while I manoeuvred the box from below.Monkeyfeet wrote: I'm planning on hoisting the gearbox up & out, or is there an easier way? (apart from dragging the car to a garage that is)
I'm not sure if there is enough room but when I did the Xantia I managed to get enough space to do the clutch by pulling the gearbox to one side without having to drop it out. Made getting it back on a lot easier especially as I was doing the job on my own.

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
Thanks guys. I'll make a start this afternoon, was thinking of putting the car front end under the car port but if I'm going to be taking out the box from underneath I'll keep it on the drive - give me some more space. Save a lot of bother not having to shift it partway through so tvm for that.
My usual factor can't get near the Euro price for the clutch. Shame, as I like using them when I can.

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
New sensor in and engine fired straight up. (Like you said it would )
Engine straight off again and I whipped the sensor back out. Looked like it had been hit but was just a load of debris stuck to it.
Just wanted to confirm the good advice.

Re: No clutch, then no engine.
Great. OK, the clutch area needs a damned good cleaning, but you know the engine will run.

Yes dead right, must admit although sure it would run, it was good to hear it.
And clutches wear out. New LUK ordered.

Gathered together what was left of the thrust bearing...
Apart from a few tiny shards in the bellhousing that was it.
