You are adding to my vocabulary on a daily basis Jim arcane yesterday and sobriquet today. :-D The context gives the meaning but I looked up both definitions in the dictionary just for that extra interpretation :!: :-D

CitroJim wrote: 20 Dec 2022, 06:11 Truth is, I've not used any of them for years as my mobile phone cameras do all I need and arguably, especially in my 'burner' Samsung, is better than any of my proper ones!
I used to have "burners" all the time and spend about £5 every 3 months. Now you are hard pushed to get a proper burner hence I have no burner at all. My burners cost about £1 to buy and didn't have a camera of any description. :-D

I first came across the term 'burner' applied to a mobile phone when I was reading my first Jack Reacher novel. Prior to that it had always been the device used for converting gas to heat in various forms from bunsen to oxyacetylene!! :-D

Your definitions of 'burner' were the only ones I knew until a couple of years ago Mick!

My first introduction to the other definition was through watching the BBC's rather excellent 'Line of Duty'... It took me, as usual, a while to understand exactly what the term meant... I think I may have received some daughterly assistance to fully understand

My second phone is not a 'burner' by the strict definition as it's far from disposable. I've had the number for years and it is known only by a very select few. As is the email address and WhatsApp account associated with it...

Its primary use is for running and cycling activities where if it became damaged or went missing it would not be any great loss... Whereas my whole world lives on my primary phone and loss or damage to that one would be catastrophic...

Having said that, when I suffered that very serious bike accident both the phone I was carrying and my Garmin watch both escaped totally unscathed... Which was more than could be said for me!

That being the case Jim I hope you have a regular backup routine. I really discovered the benefit of that a few years ago after my phone was stolen and it took me hours to enter all the info into the replacement. The only consolation I had was that the stolen one was triple locked as soon as I notified my provider and it was thus virtually impossible for my data to be used. Nowadays it is a Sunday morning job to run backup onto a memory stick so that I do not even need the internet to restore a phone should another disaster occur!! :)

Oh yes, very much so Mick :) It's something I'm very particular about having witnessed both the value of them and what can happen when backups are not available...

The term is also applied to a CB or ham radio RF amplifier.

Ahh yes Peter! Especially big ones using exotic valves... I believe, but may be wrong, it was a diminutive of 'Afterburner' being on the end of the rig and just ahead of the aerial...

I must confess I never used the term much back in the day, tending to more often refer to them as a 'Linear'...

I used to dream of building a big amp using a pair of 813 valves for the HF bands and one using 4CX250 valves for the 2M band... A friend built one of the latter and it was fascinating to see a blue plasma discharge in and around the anode cooling fins when running at full tilt... If it was being used on CW you could read the morse off the anodes!

Trying to get the rear nearside indicator on daughter's ( :grr: ) C3 to work. Not a blown bulb as initially thought but contact between bulb and holder. A couple of hours buggering about and still it won't work when attached to the car.
MOT didn't spot it, just the other £500 worth of work :(

Came in for some tools. Funny smell. Is it gas?

Yes. Shelf had come off the wall dumping its contents all over the floor.
Smashed glass, unfortunately a jar with sulphuric acid in. Fortunately very weak acid.
It was gas, butane from a blowlamp canister. Outside leaking away now.

Oh Steve :( What a game... I've had that with Citroen bulb holders and it's bloody frustrating

And that shelf... Just when you could do without such a thing... Hope the acid didn't do too much damage [-o<

Here's hoping that's it for bad stuff and from now on everything will be magic  :)
