Not really, there were some excellent shops there. A 'comic' shop that I visited with my brother in law. He sells antiques, not-quite-antiques and books. He and the comic shop owner trades books and comics.
Also a very good 'shaver shop' where I bought new parts for my shaver, but that was only a small part of their business.
Probably a couple of decades since I last was there though. May have changed.

Edit: Had a 'Streetview' wander and it is not at all what I thought. You are right, it is a dismal place.
May have to have a trip up there and renew my association with the place. Only six miles.
Not today though. (no car anyway).

I remember seeing one of those front wheel drive ones in Holland Jim, only tyre wear wasn't quite so bad as everywhere is fairly flat.
