Apparently a Red Palm Weevil
Wingspan 63mm, L = 32mm.
Sensors and tools fitted at the front.
No part number marked.

One click of the shutter today, just as it came out the camera at max zoom, and its turned out well.

Yes, it isn't sharp focus, or rich in close up detail, but neither was the scene to the naked eye, and the one click has stumbled on a nice almost impressionist image which more than conveys the time the season and the place.

Common pheasants we have in abundance - but a Reeves pheasant - a rare sight, five feet from beak tip to tail.

Not seen one of those. I used to have one that came up to my workshop in the morning, I kept a container of corn just inside the door, I used to sit on the step and feed it.

Sparrowhawk. They would be attracted to the hedge beside the kitchen window at our last house (just two miles from where we are now) as the hedge was alive with Sparrows! They would often perch and wait for up to twenty minutes studying anything that moved, swivelling their heads skywards at birds flying past. They were fast!

Heard a soft thump on the shed roof one day. Looked out to see a pair of Sparrowhawks surveying their kill - a juvenile Greater Spotted Woodpecker. They took off, leaving me their prey. The male is more colourful.



Since we moved, we see none. So they must have nested local to the previous house. We get Buzzards where we are now and there's a pair of Red Kites local, also a Peregrine Falcon from time to time. The Kites are beautiful in flight.

I expect there to be a some decent opportunities for "poppies in the fields" pics very shortly. Some reasonable roadside crops coming out in sporadic spots.

If you could find some and change the colours for me that would be fine only I can't normally see them, I'm red/green deficient - and in many other ways as well.

Thank you Mick, so that's what they look like If I pick one up I can see it but drop it in the grass and it disappears. I wouldn't really know they weren't red - except that I can see them.
