What is the armoured lump above the exhaust manifold, with all the attached pipework?
I presume the carburettor was on the opposite (RH) side?

That'd be the heavily screened and shielded distributor. It was possibly a 24V system fitted for radio - hence shielded HT leads and associated electrics.

And likely waterproofed too in case it was required to go for a swim or paddle in deep water...

This 'picture of the day' was a picture of many days ago. Our family (my son is now 50) outside a friends house 'up north'. The car behind the Cortina estate was my wife's, What is it?

How about a little clue to get me started.

Son 50 now, probably about 13/14 in the pic so thats 36 odd years ago. 1982 ish I would guess that the estate is a Mark IV Cortina maybe a Mark V.

I will enjoy having a delve because there is very little to go on. When I first looked I thought Farina Morris Oxford/Austin Cambridgey but this being the French Car Forum at it I thought possibly Peugeot 404.

Warm?

Peugeot maybe, with a Farina styled body.

Scares me that a teenager in the early 80s is now in his 50s 😲 Must be an age thing but the early 80s seems just like yesterday to me...

I was guilty the other day of asking Robyn how she thought the summer of 2018 compared to that of 1976...

She reminded me she was not born until 1992!

That was obviously to easy, very warm Neil and the rest of you. It was a particular type of 404 though, knowing me you will probably be able to guess that too, it was a rare one of its kind in those days. Any suggestions?

Jim. Yes the weeks are about as long as a day was not to far back.

Well you have posted about your 404 commenting on the comfort of its seats, it’s nice column change and it’s indenor Diesel engine, ......and the requirement for ear defenders! :-D

Whether that makes it a special and different from the rest I don’t know :)

The only different 404's were the coupés & cabrios - but not THAT different, & yet it does look vaguely familiar . . .

Well it says *hall on the boot badge, so its a Vauxhall, need to nail down what.

It has a reg which ends in AN.................now decoding this from oldclassiccar.co.uk 's nice little tables on such things...

Now I wonder before looking it up whether its a Kent registration you having confessed to being a man of Kent originally!

Back in a moment...

No, not Kent......West Ham was the registration office that first registered that car.

If we had the first letter of the reg it would have nailed down the year of first registration.

AN if my memory serves me correctly is East Ham but yes, it was taken in Kent and is a ....hall. Model and year (the car primarily) I shall have to stop sending pictures with so many clues. The car would have been about 4 years old. Oh! I cant stop sending clues.

Oh it was West Ham was it. I might just give you the first letter if it isn't guessed soon.
