Interesting after reading this:
Warning after dogs bitten by snakes on Strensall Common, near York.
Adders have been spotted at Strensall Common and have come into contact with dogs when they venture into the grass.

Jane Manley, a director at Happy Pets Yorkshire dog walkers, said she was walking a five-year-old cocker spaniel near the reserve early on the morning of April 25 when it was bitten on the nose by an adder.

The director, who has lived in Strensall for 25 years, said she was also aware of two other cases where dogs had been bitten by adders in recent weeks.

I'm pretty sure this was a grass snake - but I wondered, especially as I was prodding it about! Its the biggest one I have seen here in 50+ years, probably global warming.

Definitely a grass snake, an Adder or Viper as it’s also know has zigzagged markings and is also smaller.

Yep, grass snake it is.
Never seen any in the UK, nor a viper.
The only one I have seen was the one that bit me when in Sweden, miles from anywhere and no transport.
Didn't die that time.

They are still about but like most of these type of animals their habitat has gradually been lost. When I was a lad in the 50s there was a railway bank with a large marshy area next to it where the soil for the bank had been dug out. This was the local kids play area and there were loads of wildlife. We soon learnt that grass snakes were okay to pick up but not the Adders. The bank is no more and the marsh was filled in.

Another shadow submission. The owner seeing the shadow on the car, reversed the car back into full sunshine for the photo on the small shooting brake thread... link

This 2015 vintage Falcon original photo of a Karmann Ghia Convertible has already been entered. The additional bonus of the shadowy cameraman, gets it into my May 2023 POTD shadow picture collection.

Just call me Mr Lucky

At the start of the week I thought I could detect a slight noise from the front of the engine on my pick-up truck..... so I kept an eye (ear) on it. I had a look today and I'm glad I did. The outer sheave was parting company with the bearing it's pressed onto and was making its way towards the front of the belt cover. Thankfully it's only a half hour job to do the cambelt and pulleys on the truck so disaster avoided :) I wouldn't mind but the cambelt and tensioners were still 5-10k and one year under their (alleged) service limit and were a Gates kit :?
