In the absence of anyone selecting POTD subject matter (b) anything everything, my POTD's will continue to be exclusively Option (a) ie Wrens, Shadows, or Roe Deer.

So more Troglodytes Troglodytes from me. This time a trio of pub signs one from near Telford, the other from Calne, which I do believe has featured somewhere on the FCF before for its Sausages, and another from Beal North Yorkshire.

I will allow myself photos of a perennial favourite of POTD, under the broad heading of Shadows.

This one is particularly apt because it houses the Shadow Brewery's Brewery Tap in Otley West Yorkshire, and is rated very highly as a ghost sign.

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 26 Oct 2016, 19:04 Listening to the radio today, Vanessa Feltz to be precise, she had a guest on called Sam Roberts talking about "ghost signs" those faded remains of old advertising on walls. He's made quite a study of it, and has compiled/is compiling a record of such signs, does tours etc and makes a bit of a living out of it!

I just lap up that sort of stuff, and adds yet another element of interest in a treasure-hunty sort of way as you get out and about. There are no doubt good....but fading examples...in all parts of the Country.

One of Sam's favourites is this example, so it gets the honour of an appearance in 'Picture(s) of the day' :)

...and for the Roe deer, a pub in Reigate. Hands up if you knew that the name Reigate is thought to derive from the Old English r?ge meaning "roe deer" and the Middle English gate.

I may have posted this before, but........

A shadowy figure and a helping hand. :)
The image was arrived at by unconventional means - the wall was in an old emergency standby hospital in Germany and is covered in photoluminescent* paint. The victim volunteer** stood against the wall whilst a flashgun was let off around their head, they then moved away from the wall and then the camera image was exposed - probably manually IIRC - and this is the resultant image. 8-)

* - Photoluminescence is a process in which a molecule absorbs a photon in the visible region, exciting one of its electrons to a higher electronic excited state, and then radiates a photon as the electron returns to a lower energy state.

** - No volunteers were harmed in the making of this image..... but they may have been very slightly irradiated

I have stopped dishing out "likes", far too passive a response, but I did like that contribution Bobins, random, interesting, and unlikely to be found on any other Car forum on the world wide web, and an example of why the FCF retains my interest still.

That is an interesting image Robin :) I agree with you wholeheartedly Neil...

I'm sorry, I've had nothing interesting to post recently, all the photos I've taken since Friday have all been about running and you see quite enough of those in my blog!

I've been very busy too - with no sign of a letup just yet - which very much limits my forum time :(

The challenge has been laid down, surely someone has a farthing lying around somewhere. I don't think I have though at one time I had quite a few. :-D .

You clearly haven't read Hughie Green's regulations on the formation of competitive challenges which is where you will find Rule 173b sub section VI para 7 which clearly states "no member of the organising or challenging body shall be permitted to be awarded the offered benefit of winning the competition in hand!" As such I lay claim to said benefit as the soul proposer of this challenge to the award made insofar as it clearly does not comply with the aforesaid stipulations clearly defined within the governing documentation! :-D

If anyone can be bothered to take part and actually go and find a farthing, and photograph it, I will happily give up my self-awarded 100 points :-D

Don't think there is any danger of that based on recent participation activity.

I had a good look through my drawers in the hope of finding a farthing as I have an idea for a picture but so far no luck! The search will resume tomorrow as I'm sure I had a few when I last cleaned out my bedroom storage!! Watch this space but don't hold your breath! :-D

I know that there are no farthings here, no ha'pennies either and certainly no half farthings, last one of those I can remember spending would have been about 1955, in my pocket money from my gran.

Excellent work Gibbo...I gladly award you my 100 points :-D

For as long in the month of May 2023 as I can, I have decided personally to stick to option (a) in my first day of the month classification of subject matter. That is wrens, shadows, and Roe Deer. It's no restriction, just a creative challenge, and for everyone else the all encompassing "anything/everything just join in" perennial POTD invitation applies.

I was greeted this morning on opening the front door with a pair of Goldcrests flitting and frolicking in the tree opposite. Headed for the camera, and selected the one with the expired battery and by the time I got the one with the working battery, they had gone. Clearly the standard of photography in terms of clarity of image of the smallest British Bird and the compact point and shoot camera I have isn't going to be that good, but every picture tells a story and POTD never has had, and never will have a threshold of photographic excellence.
