I did my diesel Saxo belt three years ago. It was a demo car when we bought it so I knew it was the first belt change. In spite of being on for 14 years, the old belt looked almost like new.

That's a Lovely SEEM Gauge John :-D

The trouble with a lot of well used timing belts is indeed that they do look to be in excellent condition...

I've never yet found one that looked anything but to be honest...

Just pulled one off my V6 Activa Project engine and I know myself it's 50-odd K and five years old (I originally put it there!) and it looks just like new...

Are you local to these parts then?

I don't live far from Wolverton...

For round these parts, that's not a bad price... Who did it. There's one garage in Wolverton I'd not trust with a pedal car, let alone a cambelt
Lancashire Jim, Was looking through the old invoices from previous owner that price was 6 years ago what's average price now. First owner regularly visited Citroen Specialist First Independent in Bletchley and second owner P Thundercliffe & P Furlong Trading as O.M.S Autocare they did the cam belt.
Not sure if I can give out the name of previous owner online (can I :-#) xantia lived in Potterspury, Towcester, before that it lived in Two mile ash, Milton Keynes and now it lives in lanc's. For some reason (not blaming the owner, could've been the fuel from forecourt) the poor xantia :( had to have contaminated fuel drained/flushed and all sorts done to it twice in the space of 5 months costing £130 each time.

1.6 HDi is 10 years / 150k....did the C4 Picasso at 75k as it was noisy (many seem to go this way). 307 is on 104k / 8 years on the original belt....must get round to changing it [-o<

I think saying the 2.0 HDi is VERY easy is pushing it a bit Jim.... 1.6 Hdi on the other hand.... 8-)

But... But... That gives people the opportunity to whinge on a forum "My car's running roughly" and yet refuse to check the cam timing or rocker arms.

5 or 6 hours I think, including the water pump and thermostat and getting it bled (and cooking the electric water heater in the process  ). I would estimate 5 hours at garage rates, although if they've done lots might be quicker.

I hope you have good news about my draft horse xantia, I've been meaning to ring the last owner for a while now about the service history and the glow plug mod that OMS fitted.
Read one of your posts about dry front struts, mine are making groaning noises now and again is it best to have the car on highest setting then lift gaiter and smear lhm or will any of these be any better valvoline tectyl spray, boeshield t9 spray, lucas red n tacky #2 grease.

My personal remedy is to put the suspension on HIGH, push up both gaiter/boots, dribble a little LHM on the top of the struts, wipe the LHM up the exposed strut rods, then do a session of Citarobics to work the LHM into the seal. Never fails, but the exercise may have more to do with it than the lubrication! Back on HIGH, make sure the gaiters are clipped back on properly and that any visible dribbles of LHM on the outside of the strut cylinders are completely removed - I DO NOT want an MoT fail for "leaking front strut seal"

I use LHM on the logic that the seal is designed for LHM, and over time just might deteriorate if exposed to some other lubricant.

LHM it is, when you say unclip the gaiters is there a clamp or clip on them..

Unpop describes it better, the ends are shaped so they pop/clip on and off but there's no clips.

And then have the fun of fighting the gaiters back onto the lips on the bottoms of the strut tops!!!!

Tip... A little lube (LHM) works wonders for this part of the task

It's a Burroughs gauge which reads in Newtons but using Autodata's conversion chart it's easy enough to convert it to Seem units. Bought on ebay ten or so years ago for a song.

Yes - but turn them inside out and flex them - often the bottom of the teeth are beginning to crack. Just ready for a few teeth to be ripped off giving slipped timing.

I bought my HDi Xantia at 146k eight years ago and did the belt soon after as there was nothing in the service history to say it had been done recently. The first one had been done at 72k miles. She's just clicked over 207k now and the next belt is due at 216k when the belt will be nine years old. I'm very tempted to put a new belt on now as, for the sake of a year and a few thousand miles, the thought of ruining a damn good engine seems arrogant and penny pinching.

The thought of swmbo's focus HDi doing 150k before a belt change just doesn't feel right and, although it only has 113k on it, at ten years old it's time to change that one.
