Chris,
thanks for that much appreciated.
Ive been reading up on A DMF I'm glad Xantias don't have them after what I have been reading.
I know what you mean about the spring plates on the xantia clutch going the springs get loose and then the clutch pedal starts to feel heavier and heavier. Its the dreaded plastic clutch pedal clip that frightens me the most Ive done two now and I don't really want to do another one. Had to buy a 10mm ratchet ring spanner especially for the job.
its the knees it kills and they are not getting any younger.
I have always changed the engine oil on the 1.9td every 3k so a 110 should last a few years yet.
Do you have to add any special fluids for emissions to the Hdi's or is that only for later models?
sounds like a great motor to me.
Thanks again.
Nigel.

No DPF so no fluid on a Xantia HDi

It also has a (very light!) hydraulic clutch, so no need to worry about the clutch clip.

OOO that is good news Richard.
Sounds like they finally built the car they should have done with the Mk1 and S2.

Well the 110 has a hydraulic clutch so no clip. The clutch doesn't really go stiff like the td does but the cover just doesn't clamp the pressure plate well enough so the clutch slips.... lots of time though before it becomes undrivable.

I've just done a service on mine tonight and she hadn't used a drop of oil since the last change 12k ago. I've neglected her this time round usually I do it every 6 to 8k but my wedding got in the way. Not bad for the age of the engine!

Engine was A1 on mine at 160k when I scrapped it - it's just that 7 Scottish winters had taken their toll on everything else....

They seem to have a saying in the CCC "Never buy a used Scottish car" because the winters rot them.

Cannot believe the luck I have had with the 1.9TD this year it has gone wrong roughly every two weeks
since the MOT last year and before that it has been very reliable except when the camshaft broke due the bottom pulley disintegrating. #-o the rebuild with a replacement head hasn't affected performance fortunately.
I remember having a head gasket done on a BX after that it just didn't seem to run as well as it did before.

I'd happily have a HDI110 if one came up. Everyone says they're a brilliant engine, makes the car a great cruiser.

the 1.9td lump isn't the most refined in the world and the boost is fairly non-linear (mines gutless until 2k then goes like the proverbial) and i think less economical than the HDi. SX trim is perfect on the S2 as well, you get most of the good toys but no hydractive!

I say that about mountain bkes, bought 2 from Scotland and both were returned as kaput.

Regarding Hdi vs Xud I'd aways go Xud as I've actually in over 10years never been let down by one. My parents have had many Hdi engines and they are a nice drive but much costlier to repair more often as far as I've observed. I have a built in mistrust of any engine powered by a pcb though so I'll be on an XUD when you lot have self driving hover cars.

I've had both a 1.9td and 2.0HDI in MK1 and MK2 guises. Without doubt the MK2 is a far superior car, if only for the fact it's waterproof and you can see where you're going in the dark, the HDI engine is a masterpiece, the low revving nature is a revelation, due to the gearing, at 70 mph it's only doing just over 2000rpm, which must go a long way towards it's longevity and fantastic economy. You won't regret changing I can assure you.

The XUD was about the best diesel in the world, especially the 2.1 - until the first Hdi came out. 8-)

Oh god not denying the XUD was a fantastic engine. I actually prefer the rattle ;) newer diesels seem to knock like buggery when pulling away, mines smooth just noisier :)

Would strongly suggest that when changing the cam belt on the hdi 110 to also change the composite crankshaft pulley as well as the usual waterpump, noisy idlers etc., etc. You get another 100k of "insurance". I do not know how long the pulleys last on average, but mine separated at 123K. Not good doing a belt removal again.... :(. Better to get it all over with in one go
