Oh gosh, those really are the very worst kind of problems Mike...
My Activa occasionally does this and I feel for you... I've never discoverd the root cause in over 8 years of ownership...
But then it only happens once in a blue moon and then it never stays...
I'd be tempeted to remove all fuses from the engine bay fuse box, clean them all up and see if that helps..then do the plugs underneath the fusebox...

That's a good idea. Works in hi-fi so, under a hot bonnet etc.....could be!
