Thanks elma, Seems like Citroen want about £20 for that bit of pipe over here. Dad thought the pipes would be bonded together so wouldn't be separable without a tool.

And as I was typing out more of this message, I got a SMS from the mechanic saying the car was ready for collecting. This is what was left of the caliper:
Image

The other one came off OK with heat I believe. He said he spent most of the day on it, and asked if 1500SEK (~£112) was too much, I said no considering the indy near the flat we lived wanted to charge 1800SEK (~£133) for just 2 hrs work (possibly would have been more considering the state this one was in).

I forgot to ask what he did about the pipe though, but all in all very happy with the result.

Now I'll need to get it back up to the city for a re-test at some point.

Cupro Nickel is ok in any country I think. Don't Volvo supply Kunifer (cupro) pipes on their cars?
In Germany it is the plain copper pipe that is outlawed.

Good result Ben and at a very reasonable price.

I find that if you take a crate of beer or even a big box of luxury biscuits round to the mechanic they are over the moon, more the thought than the gift, and appreciate it far more than money and will remember next time you need something done.

This may seem a bit cynical but they like it and it reaps rewards.

I use a very nice and efficient Polish guy very close to where I work and he always goes the extra mile.

That's a good idea Steve :) I might just do something like that. Crate of beer is a bit more difficult over here if you recall that you have to get everything in Systembolaget, and from what I remember everything is sold individually!! But luxury biscuits might be in order :)

Looks like he repaired the brake pipe rather than a new one and the result doesn't look bad at all:

Would you guys expect a Dealer to spot this problem of warped caliper on a service inspection? They told me it needed new pads across the rear. I replaced the complete front pads and discs a few months ago.

LOL, I would expect a dealer to say it needs new calipers even if they only needed cleaning up.....so a big yes on that.

I would expect a dealer to say it needed new calipers (& discs) even if it only needed new pads - next year! (difficult to see warped calipers - if you don't take the wheels off!)

Pipe a neat job, I presume he has cut the end off and re-flared it in situ. Good lord, a Mechanic who actually knows how to fix things rather than just change electronic components.....

I have those same brake pipes to do on my rear Calipers. Those steel pipes tend to rust at the bends and mine are slightly crusty!
Are they standard metric? Usually do the hoses as well as that is usually a pig with corrosion and stuck fast.

Can't really tell what he''s done there. The fitting looks like a new one to me. If that were mine I'd get that exposed pipe painted Ben, last thing you need after all that is a leak. I'd use high temp paint, same sort as for callipers, sumps and rocker covers.

Yeah I think the caliper came with everything except for the pipe, pads and discs :)

Thanks for the paint suggestion, I'm out at the mo nearby a shop that sells some car stuff so after we're done with the other shopping will see if they have something for it.

If not I'll have a look online once I'm back home.

they don't look half as tricky as the bolts on the xantia calipers.

You can get paint that is suitable for exhausts, rated for something like 800C, if that helps.
