Aah!! The big engined Carlton! I had a 2.2 company car from BT and it was c**p!! I mistook it for the Senator but at least I had the right engine!! :-D
I know that Lotus breathed on the Carlton too but I can't remember which engine the Lotus boys played with, though I seem to remember them racing in saloon cars, later to become the BTCC. :)

Those Allegros weren't really as bad as they were made out to be, the basic models were very basic but the higher spec ones were ok.

The problem they, like most British cars at the time had was that the motor magazine writers ran them down unmercifully.

So why was that?

Imagine you're a writer in the motor magazine business, you get an invite to the launch of say a new BMW or VW, "Come and have a week in Berlin or Stuttgart in a five star hotel at our expense for the launch of our new X model."

Well you're not going to turn that down, or say the new model's a piece of sh*t are you? Wouldn't get a second invite.

The alternative is "Come and have half a day at Longbridge to see the launch of the new Allegro, tea and sandwiches will be provided. :-D
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Enjoyed that! :-D Went to the motor show in the last throes of the Allegro when they had the "Allegro's got Vroom" campaign....

and this is how the Allegro was given the vanden plas treatment

Yes thats a Megane coupe cabriolet given the Floride special edition treatment. I have taken a couple of photos of ones I have spotted out and about. The first one I came across was at Richmond (N Yorks) Station and the other I have a chat with the owner as our paths often used to co-incide at Marks and Sparks car park :-D

I'll dig my posts up. I did take an interest in them because of the floride badging, and I probably wouldnt say no, but they are just a touch bulky looking and a little bit of sleekifying may have created something a little more desirable. Same goes for the SAAB convertibles, I find them interesting enough but there is something not quite right about their overall slightly too heavy look in my opinion.
