8lb sledge = quite a lot of percy-whatsit :-D

I was wondering how on earth you managed to pull the inner race right through

On the getting it out - I would add the winding the tension on with the puller, then getting the hub 'kin hot, and then whacking the back of the tool with the tension on may get it shifting. Once it has started it will come out ok, but getting it started is going to be a challenge.... :P

Shim on the tool too small to push the outer race so just mangles the bearing?

Only prob is the difference between the rim of the bearing and the beginning of the hub carrier is like under a millimetre :/
So as suggested gonna pull from the inner raised area

ok, right.
Really getting somewhere now :)

I've got the outer bearing race out! Cheers for heads-up guys :D

As suggested, pulled from the lip inside the race with that puller kit in the red case shown earlier.
When it wouldn't move from me swinging on it, I gave it a big bit of persuasion from the, not 8 but 10lb sledge hammer.
Kept doing that till I was able to wind it out.

Ok, so I suppose as the Haynes manual always states.... "refitting is just the opposite of removal"

Other than pressing that bearing in straight and so not letting it lean to one side whilst it goes in.
Is there anything I should be aware of when I do this for real on my poor Xantia? :/
Thanks for the pointers.

oh and I need to make sure I'm putting the pressure on the outer ring of the new bearing.
Maybe I could use the old outer bearing to help do this. Or just get the right size pate from that kit.

eep, hope this works, else the car will be unmoveable for a rather long time :/
Before starting, I better move it to a good place to abandon it, for if it goes wrong! 8'(

You're past the worst now :-D

Make sure the bearing housing is spotless. Freeze the new bearing and the inner hub overnight to shrink them and warm the outer hub gently if you can. Lightly oil the housing and outer bearing face with light oil. Then press the bearing in being very careful to start it square. This is VITAL as if it starts off skew-whiff it can be hard to resolve the issue. Press only on the outer race, never on the inner.

Then, when the bearing is home, press in the inner hub whist supporting the other side of the inner race. This is VITAL as there is a risk of splitting the bearing apart otherwise. If this happens then the bearing is effectively destroyed and you'' need to start again.

Install the circlip...

Job done!

Yep, I meant to say you can use the old bearing bits as mandrels for pressing...

Easy to get the old inner race off... Very carefully angle grind through it at a 45 degree angle but not quite all the way. Be so careful you don't nick the surface of the hub..

I go about 80% through and then smack a big cold chisel in the cut. The bearing will then break at the cut and fly off..

You can still use it as a mandrel...
