Good thinking Andy :-D Wasn't there once a whistle device for just that purpose? It would whistle as you approached TDC on the compression stroke...

froglet wrote:After the posts last night, during the baby steps re-timing, I had a 'midnight moment'. With the crank at TDC it could just as easily be at the start of the power stroke, rather then induction - the pump and cam sockets wouldn't be at their correct timing points; hence the way-out positions. If I turn the crank another full turn, perhaps the positions were not so out.(Past tense)
Apart from taking off the cam cover to check valve positions, is there another way of checking that TDC is actually for start of induction rather than power stroke. (It was so much easier with petrol - wait for the spark, tune from there!)

bud me thinks you are thinking way toooooo much which seems to be over complicating to hole procedure #-o :? :-D

as i said earlier set the rear face/edge of the crank shaft woodruff key in line with the rear face/edge of the small raised square block which is on the end of the crank case just above the crank sprocket,

this will get the crank within a gnats whisker of TDC locking peg dropping into the flywheel

No, honestly Malcolm, I'm sure there was a TDC whistle once available for petrol engines. You screwed it into the plug 'ole of the cylinder you wanted to find TDC on...

Or am I dreaming?

i did a goooogly search though and these results came up

Thank goodness for that Malcolm. I thought I was loosing it

Seriously, the idea discussed at http://www.btc-bci.com/~billben/tdc.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; could well be used on an IDI diesel via the glowplug hole of the cylinder in question. Make up a adaptor using a dead glowplug and away you go...

Excellent find sir!

OH DEAR!!!
Done everything again - TDC, flywheel pegged, cam and IP sprockets aligned and pegged etc etc. All stay in sync after several rotations. So teeth must be positioned right.
I'd like to say after all this practice I can whip it all off to the cambelt in 5 minutes, but I'd rather not. It still won't go !**!
No electrical testers with me - not at home (S*d's Law). Desperately checked fuses for pump feed but all seems OK.
Do I really have to call in the Citroen cavalry, including tow? Flat battery, no charger, of course.
Why can't they be like the TV - hit it with a hammer in top right corner?
Yes, it has got fuel in it, in fact the hand primer goes rock hard.
Dejected.

Add another problem - I'm in the middle of the French Pyrenees.
At least I've got lovely views - from under-car level!

Sounds lovely. Perhaps that'll entice someone out there to assist...

Team WFA will be in France in late April

It's Going!! Well, in a manner of speaking.
Re-charged battery, almost flattened it again but it did cough. Then coughed again then actually started running.
Very reluctant to get to 4k revs but did eventually. Lots of black sooty smoke from back and stinking steamy smells from front BUT it went. Settled down somewhat after left to warm up.
Will now get it in for a dynamic timing at Citroen dealer. Watch this space for how much of a mortgage I'll need.
If anyone has any further info re soot and sooty smoke before I take it to MD tomorrow morning; I would be eternally grateful.

Many thanks for all suggestions/information.
Don't actually need extra pair of eyes to admire the view - but balance it with the thought that it's very easy to push cars downhill, considerably harder to push them back up 7000 feet!
Will look out for Team WFA - now understand the reference to Captain Slow - I actually thought he was always the more sane of the trio.
