If i get the gunk off Chris then I may have a chance to see the problem. The dirtiest one is the second one in from the camel end. Is that no 2 or no 3?

Sorry Davie, I haven't got my C2 manual anymore. I would assume they'd be numbered from the Left. I'm sure someone here will know better than I. The thinners painted on with a paintbrush will remove any crap and lrt you see whats going on.

That is what I need. To be honest I can't really see what is going on in there. That will be tomorrow's job, after I take my son in law to Dyce to go to Amsterdam first thing. 0330 start for me then!

So if injector seals, it cuts out when the pressure drops after heat expansion and leakage? I have seen Renault DCI where seals were leaking and smoking for months. The whole front end and engine compartment was filthy with soot. Car drove in. It was half hour with a vacuum cleaner.

Check tightness first. Then hope that driver did not sell because it needs injectors too! If only seals, you would think he would have replaced. Mind you......there are some crazy people where cars are concerned.

It starts cold and runs cold perfectly. It starts cutting out when the temp gauge comes out of the red and stops completely when up to normal. It's wet sludgy stuff seems to be coming from cylinder 2 from the camel side the worst and cylinder 3 a bit less. 1 & 4 don't seem so filthy. I did think maybe a turn with a spanner might fix it. I see injectors on ebay not as expensive as I would have thought, but would used ones be worth it? I wouldn't think so. If it is injectors then it will go back to the auction. It runs cleanly enough to go through the ring!

I've cleaned up the filth as good as I can, and I can't see ant signs of a leak. It's running perfectly with the air box off, and the air filter is not too bad. It does need changing but not so badly that it would be a problem. It's going to a garage to get checked over, but will be a week tomorrow. A different local back St indy that has been recommended by a mate.

So if you can't see any leaks, where's all the crap come from? Maybe there was a problem before you bought the car, and they couldn't be bothered to clean up the aftermath?

Doesn't help with tracing the present problem, sorry :( Hope it proves to be a simple & not too expensive fix - you don't really want the hassle of putting the car back in the auctions, and finding a replacement

The guy in the garage said it doesn't sound like an injector problem the symptoms i have. He thinks it may be as simple as a dodgy fuel filter. That would be a bonus! It's running fine with the air box off, the EML is on but there is a sensor disconnected.

It's still starting and running as sweet as a nut with the air box off but has a lack of go with the EML on. It feels like an old school non turbo diesel. I have done over 100 miles in it no problem. I'm going to put the air box back on and see what happens. There is a sensor on it so I am wondering if it is gubbed. The crud all cleaned off no problem with cellulose thinners. Thanks Chris for the tip.

The airbox and all associated stuff is back on and connected up and it's running faultlessly. I noticed that it was moted 7 months ago and not used until I bought it. My theory now is that it just needed using to get going. It got an italian tune up today along my favourite twisty road, which starts 1/2 mile from the house. The EML has now gone off, turbo is restored all seems good just now.

My son in law gets trade discount and has been instructed to get decent oil, air fuel and oil filter for it. With hindsight it was playing up while I was running off the fuel that was in it which could well have been 7 months old and supermarket rubbish and been off. Still dosent explain the filth and crud on top of the engine though. Now that's cleaned off I shall keep a beady eye on it.
