Vas is technically middle east Neil.

Here is an odd one.

Country: Norden (Norway/Sweden/Finland and parts of Russia)
It is from the nomadic Sami people (Lapplanders to us unwashed masses)
Language: Sami
The program is from Sweden.
Singer: Jon Henrik Fjällgren.
Song title: Probably "Daniel"

*The Sami people, also spelled Sámi or Saami, are the indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the Arctic area of Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of far northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Kola Peninsula of Russia, and the border area between south and middle Sweden and Norway. The Sámi are the only indigenous people of Scandinavia recognized and protected under the international conventions of indigenous peoples, and hence the northernmost indigenous people of Europe.
Traditionally, the Sami have pursued a variety of livelihoods, including coastal fishing, fur trapping, and sheep herding. Their best-known means of livelihood is semi-nomadic reindeer herding. Currently about 10% of the Sami are connected to reindeer herding and 2,800 are actively involved in herding on a full-time basis. For traditional, environmental, cultural and political reasons, reindeer herding is legally reserved only for Sami people in certain regions of the Nordic countries.
*A joik, (also spelled yoik), luohti, vuolle, leu'dd, or juoiggus is a traditional Sami form of song. Originally, joik referred to only one of several Sami singing styles, but in English the word is often used to refer to all types of traditional Sami singing. According to music researchers, joik is one of the longest living music traditions in Europe, and is the folk music of the Sami people. Its sound is comparable to the traditional chanting of some Native American cultures.

The Pickled Egg-Song Contest 2017 Sat May 13th!

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Seeing as we are on a new page I'll keep repeating the "Rules".
The Rules :!:
Nominate a "Song" identify the "Country" provide the customary listening/viewing link.
More than one entry per country/nominator allowed.....may the best song win.

Customary bias to be supplied by the Landlord, nominations close when the Landlord feels like it, winner arbitrarily awarded by the Landlord :-D
So far.....

Italy(3),France(1),China(2),Japan(1),Latvia(1),Greece(1),Canada(3),Sweden(2),Norway(1),Columbia(1),Germany(1),
Iran(1),Paraguay(1)Finland(3), Norden (1)

Representatives from Europe, The America's. The Middle East, The Far East and the Arctic! still vast areas of the globe not covered.

Africa in all its varieties isn't there yet, no Austrailia/NZ, India, Asia etc . Keep going with the nominations!..and where are the interesting nominations from our own Royaume-Uni de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande du Nord :-D

India needs to be in the mix. Bit of sitar required. Anoushka Shankar will do

Not many vocals in this one, but I'll stuff it in as an entry for Mexico, with more than an acknowlegement to the Sahara!

Although I didn't get to the Pickled Egg 'til quite late today, I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to this evening's selection - thank you Neil and Steve :-D Particularly enjoyed The Edmund Fitzgerald - that one normally stops me in my tracks and forces me to listen.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

On The Sahara theme -
Band: Tinariwen
Country: Northern Mali
Language: Most probably.

I was fascinated by this mob on this actual show (Jools Holland - Later)

Tuaregs apparently.
Seen them live twice at The Sage, Gateshead and they are phenominal.

The Pickled Egg-Song Contest 2017 Sat May 13th!

I am going to stuff one in from Helen Folasade Adu a surprising contemporary of mine

Definitely claimable for the UK. I've a feeling there is a much greater catalogue of work waiting to be discovered away from the popular singles.

Final one for this evening.
Country: Poland
Song: Gdzie są kwiaty z tamtych lat? You will recognise it when you hear it. I reckon it is the absolute best version of this particular song.
Singer: Sława Przybylska

I bought the double CD from Poland, absolutely superb and one of the best packages I have seen.
Lent it to a Polish friend at work who thought I was giving it to her and I haven't the heart to ask for it back.
I do have it ripped to one of the computers though :)

Thanks Steve, great stuff, I think the landlord will have a good deal of mulling over before the winner is declared!

Nominations still open as yet,

Its in with a shout Lexi!

I find when you do have songs note for note in your head its sometimes a bit irritating when arrangements get messed about with in live performances. "Reeling in the years" by Steely Dan is a case in point. Totally iconic guitar work which I do know note for note, and which the experts Becker and Fagen totally botched on some of their live versions...slowing it down and completely ruining the feel (in my opinion of course!)
