It's a mixed bag for me. I can very much enjoy the lyrics - anything from Billy Bragg and Matt Johnson, to Judy Tzuke and Fiona Apple, calling at all stations in between. But I also enjoy the music itself. I also thoroughly enjoy listening in to the music to see what's there. Many many of the records in my collection are still revealing depths previously unheard to me - I've got albums I've owned over 30 years that I'm still hearing new nuances in. That, for me, is one of the great pleasures of listening to music on a decent hi-fi setup. There's not much I won't listen to, but there's an awful lot I will :)

I'll not put it up on th jukebox but I have been tempted to go and have a listen myself to a version of one of the best known songs in the world which I probably wouldn't normally seek out. Bit of a ringing endorsement of the version from one of the greats, although it is only through the channels of this thread that I have come to appreciate his work, thanks mainly to Steve. The most famous version of the song, and one Mick has declared his liking for, according to the link in the spoiler was in the end a song which the artist disliked.

So for the curious if you havent got it already the page is in the spoiler. I picked out the original, and in this case the tune was a French Composition with French lyrics, yes I'll give that a delve, and the version of it getting the huge compliment.
Spoiler: show
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Way
Leonard Cohen said of the song:
I never liked this song except when Sid Vicious did it. Sung straight, it somehow deprives the appetite of a certain taste we’d like to have on our lips. When Sid Vicious did it, he provided that other side to the song; the certainty, the self-congratulation, the daily heroism of Sinatra’s version is completely exploded by this desperate, mad, humorous voice. I can’t go round in a raincoat and fedora looking over my life saying I did it my way — well, for 10 minutes in some American bar over a gin and tonic you might be able to get away with it. But Sid Vicious’s rendition takes in everybody; everybody is messed up like that, everybody is the mad hero of his own drama. It explodes the whole culture this self-presentation can take place in, so it completes the song for me.

It is fantastic how much influence some tracks can have on our lives. A few months after I met SWMBO, I came home from work to find her weeping a bit in the kitchen. I asked her what was wrong and she simply said she was worried that our new relationship wasn't going to last like her previous one hadn't. I'm not great in those situations, being a bit too practical in general, but playing her this song saved the day and she has never worried since, that was in 2007 so not too bad! :-D

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

With regard to lyrics again. If they are in English or Swedish, so I can understand them, I can appreciate and like them and as above, Fiona Apple is a favourite.
Love them while listening but they are gone like a puff of smoke when the song ends.
Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Heather Nova and so many others.
Unfortunately unable to retain them for very long.

Your Alma Cogan bit reminded me of our workshop foreman back then, he was a big fan and had tears in his eyes when she died.
