I haven't ignored it Steve, and for that reason it is an unfair comparison, but if you just put on the headphones and listen to the audio it is exceedingly difficult, but just possible, to determine who is singing which lines in the first part. JE's range, control and tonal quality is truly astounding for her age and I daresay if I hear her sing the song when she is fully matured it will be indistinguishable in terms of tonal quality but may be better, equal to or worse than BS, only time will tell!! :)

When she was 18 - she will be 21 in April.

Done differently of course, she isn't after mimicking Streisand.

Without doubt a more accomplished and personalised rendition, however I'm not sure that makes it better overall. The sound envelope generated by her voice seems to have sharper boundaries than previously which gives her voice a slightly more piercing quality for my ears. In the younger recording the sound was rounder and softer for me, but that may be because at 10 she was deliberately trying to copy BS whereas now she has developed her own voice. Whatever the reason I'll wait until I hear her singing in her late twenties or early thirties (if I'm around that long :-D ) to make a more balanced judgement!! :)

Could also be the sound engineer/recording techniques. The first is clearly a live recording, straight from the sound board.
The second is her first independent recording (she is her own boss now, split from Sony)* so the recording studio may have adjusted the sound somewhat - I agree that it has a more piercing quality and that is not her style, she is usually very mellow. If it is that then I am surprised that she passed it. She had the previous CD binned and re-released when Sony screwed up a track - I have two her, a free one from Sony/Amazon to replace the dud. (Three actually - also a Japanese release that is different.)
It will indeed be interesting to see how her voice changes in the next ten years.
That track is one I generally skip.

Like Broadway/Musicals, I dislike Christmas music with one easy to guess exception. As Christmas approaches I may be moved to entertain everyone with a deluge of Christmas songs.
Put the sprouts on!

*Despite her low profile, I read a few days ago that she is the fifth richest self-made teen in the world.

The who's the best singer/guitarist/band debate in music has been going on for ages, of course there isnt a correct answer its your own personal preference. Donald Fagen of Steely Dan is not a good singer, but his vocals are the sound of Steely Dan and on the very few tracks that he doesnt "sing" on its not quite the same. Ditto with Mark Knopfler.

Anyway I though I would recall from the 70's when there was a distinct chasm between "chart" pop artists and "progressive" music with proper musicians and concept albums.

So the playground argument was who were better Slade or Emerson Lake and Palmer.

and the conclusion from one particpant in the debate
Spoiler: show
Well I reckon Slade could fill in Emerson Lake and Palmer any day of the week

Indeed it could Steve, in which case we will have to wait and see!

I am guessing the Christmas song you like would be The Pogues? (Excluding any JE may have recorded of course!)

I too like that and A Winter's Tale by David Essex but that's my limit on the Xmas front!! :)

The pickled egg does have its winter selection ready to be enhanced and added to each year.
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 01 Nov 2020, 19:04 Well it is almost the time of year for the pickledeggjukebox winter selection which kicked off with Joni doing the same song. Not a bad effort from Jackie, faultless really. Joni lived it as well as wrote it.
