José Padilla Sánchez

my discovery of the day. How? A simple factoid on Steve Wright's big show. Question was posed who wrote the music for the song "Smile" probably made most famous by Nat King Cole.

Answer...Charles Chaplin no less. The tune appeared in his score for the film "Modern Times".

In an earlier film of Chaplin's City Lights which he also wrote much of the score for, this composition by Jose Padilla Sanchez "La Violeterra" also was used. I quite like it....not often a bit of Spanish music appears on the PE Jukebox! Many versions

P.E.Jukebox-Proper Movie Themes Night

Post by NewcastleFalcon » 12 Apr 2019, 16:55

...classics in their own right. Would Hitchcock ever have been so dramatic and scary without Bernard Herrmann's brilliant scores....(yes the other Bernard Herrmann not the Conductor of the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra and firm favourite of the "light programme"!)

Here's a nice pair one from Vertigo, one from North by Northwest

Note the conductor!
Sarah Hicks, one of very few female conductors. Noticed her straight away as she was conductor at a prestigious concert in St. Petersburg (Russia) where Jackie Evancho performed at only 12 years old.

Also:
from the final parts of the third film:

Top quality orchestra there Steve, enjoyed that and autoplayed on to some other stuff they have done.

Now when I say proper movie themes night, I am going to choose an obscure movie I had never heard of but it does have Ennio Morricone' genius all over it, and this is what I would describe as an achingly beautiful piece of music.
