These would permit adequate grip, but wouldn't keep the fingers warm…. #-o

OK, but would you mind doing the steering if I yell directions? :-s
Just hook up a XBox to the wheel nut and connect over the internet, hands free......so you can sit on them to keep them warm.
Brilliant! Probleem solved. [-o<
:?: Why didn't I think of that? :grr:  :miserable: I feel stupid. :lolhit:

something like this might be ideal, then I could drive hands free, stay at home and, tell Traffic Enorcement that I wasn't in the vehicle!

Heated steering wheel !!?

I've never heard of needing such a thing, certainly not in the UK. The Xantia steering wheel is not particularly cold IMHO and two of the air vents can point directly at your hands, so who needs a heated wheel ?

So it might be a bit cold for a few minutes until the heater warms up, but so will the seats and everything else.

Bah, humbug! :-D

I wonder how safe a heated steering wheel would be? I mean, to be of any use it would have to have a few amps going to it, for it to generate any useful heat, and the wiring would have to use some form of rotary connector. Imagine if the wiring were to fail, and short against the COM2000 unit or dump into your hands!

You can even have a heated steering wheel as an option on a Vauxhall Corsa these days.

I'd have one. Yes. Even in the UK. It's not pleasant at 5am when it's -10c in winter and polite people don't like letting their car idle for 20 mins outside to warm the interior up, and wake the neighbours..

Heated steering wheel or not?

Post by John Plum »

I was joking by raising this topic of course :-)

I am serious about gloves though. Perfectly adequate on a car. Low tech. They need to be leather, and thin for safety.

But it was cold yesterday evening, my fingers hurt a little on the chilled wheel. That discomfort, I think is dangerous for a driver - affects handling of the wheel and easy concentration. Until I get a replacement pair of gloves, I'll have to warm the car up like I used to before driving, when my children were tiny delicate humans.

Try a pair of lightweight windproof cycling gloves. I have a couple of pairs. I use them for driving on cold mornings. In the 3 wheeler open car, I use winter motorbike gloves.

Hey, both excellent ideas. I've used single skin leather racing M/c gloves and, also those single skin army leather gloves in place if standard 'driving gloves'

I don't like a cold car but find even at minus temp Fred warms up quickly enough. I have the opposite problem in the summer, when the steering wheel is too hot to touch. Fortunately the rambla to town is so straight there's not much steering needed!
