Had a 3008 with the dreaded 1.6 HDI drove in with oil light on last week, only done 40,000 miles and full service stamps.
How in the name of the Lord(s) can 40K block up a sump stainer ?

I believe the bottom banjo bolt on the turbo return also has a strainer in it that may need a clear out too. Not sure whether you access it from the top or bottom though!

Can anyone describe the material that blocks the strainer, & where it comes from? Would it be a slow build up of carbon/burnt oil from the turbo bearings? The few oil strainers that I've seen have tended to have quite a coarse mesh.

The main (but not only) problem is with the sump design. The sump plug is recessed, which results in about 0.5L remaining when doing an oil change. This is where the crud ends up, and so does not get removed. Over time this becomes a problem. Even on later, modified 1.6l HDi engines this remained (I don't know about the latest). I recall that whenever I had my company van serviced the mechanic would start by jacking the nearside wheel up so there was several (at least 6) inches between it and the ground, and, if there was the option of a slope, the offside was downhill!

There are pictures here on the forum of the banjo filter (original and replacement), and the mesh is very fine, so that grains of granulated sugar would not pass through it.

AFAIK the 1.6 HDI creates a lot of carbon deposits, possibly due to its design, which tend to find themselves distributed throughout the oil ways in the engine. Some of these deposits find their way into the sump and then get sucked up by the oil pick up pipe. They then block the mesh strainer in the pick up resulting in oil starvation to the engine, and especially the turbo. Generally there's no way to get rid of all the carbon deposits, even by stripping the engine down.

Regular oil changes (max 6k miles) do help and some people (myself included) have removed the mesh strainer from the pick up to prevent it getting blocked again. It's also a good idea to remove the very fine mesh strainers in the turbo feed pipe to maximise oil flow and prevent blockages.

I change the oil in our Picasso 1.6 HDI yearly at the MOT time 10k miles or so, fully synth all the way. I dropped the sump and replaced the turbo oil pipes (well I bought them so may as well use them) when I did the belts at 85k. The sump, crank case, oil stainer and turbo pipe filter were all clear as a bell :)

while working in a certain diesel engine factory test shop, circa 1998,the engines used a slave filter (Birfield) fitted in the test bed.
we had a spate of engines blowing/seizing up due to this filter clogging up prematurely, although the system oil pressure was satisfactory. over 70lbsq in ..

restricted/no flow......=another dead engine........

con rod ends look funny lying in a pool of water and oil,........ red hot and sizzling away......
so we fitted pressure gauges either side of this filter, and when we got 15 lbs differential, we changed the filters..
