Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and Musical Stuff
I spoke too soon on the boxer, lights off again but the bulbs not blown. That'll be going to the garage now.
I fitted the usb kit to the xantia and it works a treat. It will be sometime before I get to Wales to print a nice, factory look, retaining insert.
It's powered by splicing into the cigarette lighter wires. I moved the fuse as well so they are on switched live.
The unit is compact and has been stuck to a convenient piece of plastic.
The usb leads were more than long enough but the power leads were much to short and have been extended approximately x3.
I'm very happy with it at the moment, as long as it is reliable it's exactly what I wanted.
Fixing V6 is deferred indefinately again. Kelvs needs lots of vets bills paying over the next few weeks and he is the priority.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and Musical Stuff
Thanks Jim.
It's not quite there as the usb sockets have to be removable by going downwards.
They are well wedged in but I can see that being a problem long term.
I'll fully cut out the coin slots later and make a 2 piece insert for each side so they are secure but not under pressure.
In the meantime I just have to be careful not to push down too hard on them or they will dissappear into the center console.

Oh yeah you are manual.
It wouldn't work for me either if I were.
Could easily move them to anywhere on the center console or the ashtray.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and Musical Stuff
Time to hold up hand to being klutz of the class, but there's something that's always puzzled me about USB ports: my devices that have USB plugs came with chargers (or work with universal ones) that plug into the cigar lighter, or power socket. If I plug a device into an on-board USB port (or, say, one on my PC), i.e. doing away with the charger, will someone explain (hopefully, in terms I'll understand) how (indeed, why) it still works.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and Musical Stuff
Keypads not an issue for me.
I'm guessing your code is 7890.
The head unit I'd like eventually has 2 usbs as well but I'm planning on putting them to the left of the head unit in a custom insert as the head unit itself will fill the hole top to bottom but not left to right. They will be for music rather than charging so I'd like both.
I'm starting to wonder about that now though, I wanted a full-size screen built into the car that would run WAZE satnav. That would be nice but having driven the van for a bit and played with the bluetooth, which is the other reason I wanted to swap the head unit, I'm convinced that handsfree mobile calls in the car are bloody dangerous. I don't like satnavs in my windscreen view though and it would be nice if the stereo turned itself down for directions. Plus I must have a sub, music is so incomplete with 1/3 of the frequency range cut off. Also I must retain the steering wheel buttons which only the Joying seems to support.
I'm starting to wonder if I could cram in a shallow double din like this as well. It doesn't really matter right now though, I'll fix the car before I go buying a stereo then I'll do the bodywork. I may keep the factory head unit if I can find a satisfactory way of running a sub with it and fix the tape player.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and Musical Stuff
Guess wrong
My Sat Nav sits in the lower left of my windscreen......as it is LHD it causes no problems ....see there are some advantages
Always wondered about a tablet, but it would have to sit high where the ait vents are...."just" below line of sight.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and Musical Stuff
I can't stand anything on top of the dashboard or on the windscreen.
I even used to hide my tax discs behind the rear view mirror, seeing them really bugged me.
I don't use my actual satnav as I can see it, well I do in the van but I leave it in the middle glovebox as it's more than loud enough to hear.
You'd be lucky to fit a glove in my Xantia glovebox.
In the Xantia I pullout my ashtray and wedge my phone between it and the heater buttons (sliders), which is partially why I put the USB where I did as the fag lighter one messed up my phone wedging.
I wish there was a way of turning off calls and texts without turning off the satnav though, really bugs me as people always call just as I enter a network of roundabouts so the voice of satnav shuts up until I am lost and the phone stops ringing.

It would still vibrate and turn off the sat nag voice.
My old Nexus 4 you could set to refuse or divert calls.
This Samsung is just rubbish, it doesn't have the basic android features as the Samsung nonsense is piled up on top of it like a big steaming heap of....
I wonder of the iPhone is any better.
Time to chase that up, I'm missing an iPhone and an iPad that are meant to be part of my salary.

Usb is a 2 way data cable with a 5v power supply built in.
The cigar lighter chargers just change the cars 12v to 5v and omit the data pins.
A usb socket just has power at 5v and, if its a radio or pc connection, the data pins as well.
