I think it's a forlorn hope that that is anything other than clutch fluid - I've opened an indicator switch and there is just a small amount of grease in there - not a puddle of liquid

Think you have little option other than 2nd hand - at least in the first place if you need it on the road (although you could try the local dealer - although it's NFP there might be a part on the shelf somewhere, and you should be able to negotiate a discount!). If you can get it going again, then you will have a spare that you can compare with options / see if you can open the master and make a repair. Having said that - I have not seen this before, so it is very rare, and a 2nd hand one is more than likely OK.

This or thismight yield a spare (part is common on 2.1 TD / 2.0 HDi 110 / 2.0 Turbo).

Hope you get it fixed!!

You could try Bigg Red for a repair kit or even single seals. http://www.biggred.co.uk/onlinestore.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Right then.. I shall come in here now!

Firstly, the 406 and Xantia use the same SLAVE and MATER cylinders ONLY but the connecting tube is different shapes.

The unit is a completely sealed unit, in that even though theres a resovior it is NOT top up able. The reserviour is for compenstaion of Clutch Friction plate wear. Hydraulic clutch setups ALL have the bite in the same place, and is always in the same place worn or new!!

The GOOD news is, this is the first one Ive ever seen with a leak! It reasure this, IVe seen two now, my own at 283k never leak, and a taxi at 288k neither ever leaked!

I can have a look in the shed for a proper xantia one, and i think they are quite swappable in situ but would need to check it out further to be sure.

It all depends on the total cost of repair inc parts, I will be printing off a list of most citroen dealers and checking if they have the particular part(s) [-o<
in the mean time I will be fixing the window regulator. My only hope is that my current mechanic can do some doctoring with the 406 parts, will also be contacting Malcolm (Savoy) see if he has any insight, tried martin at Pleiades he hasn't any parts or kits for hydraulic clutch system also tried Malcoln at citroen spares specialist in Bradford and no joy. WHY DID IT HAVE TO HAPPEN TO ME, I'm the second owner and it's only on 109K with Full citroen and cit specialist history and in absolutely mint condition mechanically, I don't if it's because of town driving constant clutch usage that it's happened because I never engage clutch until I need to (unlike some clutch lovers who like to engage first at traffic lights that have just turned red [-X ). I hope with every ones input I/we can save the xantia from being listed on ebay for parts.

Grateful for any advice or if you can put me in the right direction of a citroen GOD who can repair or fix if all else fails from my end.

Cheers

Or I could take it to the doctors in a sample bottle and ask for it to be tested as it came out of my nose...

So do you think It can be cut here and there to get it to fit, and is what I need similar or identical to this photo,

Image

and is it a particular model/year/hatch/estate other than 406 110 Hdi 8v, if it needs cutting to fit the xantia can the pipe not be cut and then plastic piece placed between pipes and hose clamps, and is it possible to do this on the original unit and pump in the lost fluid and if the seals can be repaired or replaced

Had a mondeo tddi for nearly 4 years it had done 280k and when I parted with it it had 296k and never once had a problem with hydraulic clutch, ex taxi from Scotland, that car was treated with care and it never let me down, other than when I let it run dry and it spluttered to a stop, I remember when I put up my last post on Talkford forum explaining I had sold the mondeo and bought a xantia, there were one or two grrrr's and name calling (to the citroen brand not me) and I thought I could run the xantia for a couple of years and take it from there, hoping I can..

Cheers Paul

IIRC, a couple of years ago, CitroJim did some work on what is essentially a sealed hydraulic system on what I think was a 110 or maybe his 2.1TD. I seem to recall he cut the pipe somewhere and inserted/brazed in a T piece (and valve?) so that the hydraulic fluid could then be topped up.

Have to say, it sounds a terrible system that cannot be topped up, and yet as Paul suggests, the system can be very reliable.

I did indeed Martin,

I'll dig deep in my memory and try to find the topic... I have to recall the title of it...

Essentially I devised a method of adding a bleed nipple to the slave cylinder to enable the system to be bled if the slave cylinder blew apart, which they do sometimes if the clutch release bearing lets go...

Then the OP has the opportunity to just replace the master cylinder and bleed it...

Thanks!
Just got car back from garage (MOT) they checked the clutch thoroughly and found that the pedal arm had been sprayed with some sort of anti corrosion coating similar to multi purpose 506 (tectyl) and that as the car was stood for almost 3 weeks and with the sunny days in between the gunk softened and trailed onto the mat again just a small amount as shown in pic. Pedals been cleaned since and no more stain.

Thanks all fro your help and advice.
