I've never had a petrol turbo and the only one I have ever driven is Jims activa but it was only round a rally field. That's maybe something I have to rectify

That would be 16 C then Peter? And the reason the economy was better on the way back from Scotland is, as everyone knows, its all downhill to England!! :-D

The decimal place was in the right place, but the temperature was un-signed. It should have been preceded by a minus sign.

And for Peter N it's just as well that Scotland didn't get independence. Think of the fuel you would use knocking a hole through the new wall [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]

My youngest daughter had a couple of petrol turbo SAABs that were great fun as long as you ignored the fuel gauge.
Eldest son had a 2.4L petrol turbo S60 that was also quite amusing but automatic. Preferred the manual SAABs although the Volvo was more economical  .
Never known an (relatively) economical Volvo before.

I could, if I was careful, get around 33mpg out of my tweaked Classic Saab 900 T16.

When my wife was hospitalised back in 2001 and had a miscarriage, I was 200 miles away at the time. I managed 13.9mpg on the way back...

you might find it's more economical going faster though? Friends got a Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 TD auto 85mph is most economical speed @2000rpm drop to 70 and get less. 6speed auto box

Yes, I think that with modern engines and the instincts of old school drivers, there is a tendency to shift early relative to optimum fuel usage.

Interestingly, if you learn to shift based more or less on the instantaneous fuel usage readout, it suddenly starts making you drive more like the autos people kvetch about; hanging on to gears, revving out...

I find the most economical way to drive, in just about every car I've had, is to accelerate quickly up to speed, and then almost roll along just tickling the throttle when needed. The V6 Xantia and my last Impreza responded very well to that. The C5 HDi, I find is best when changing up just at the top of the initial shove of the torque curve, around 2500rpm

In my absence what an inspired conversation this turned into. Well an undulating ramble between the art of motorcycle maintenance and Top Gear that is, just like real life.
I just got 50mpg @ 60mph use cruise so that was better. Will continue however and do the ERG, DSP, FAP. Avoiding where possible RAC, DOA, SORN ;)
