No Kenny, why do you ask? I had thought about adding an isolating valve so that I could remove the heater in the summer easily without having to do all that draining.. but I decided against it.. maybe in 2 yrs time when the next coolant change is due.

Chris,

I was just curious but I can understand why your doing what you're doing having lived in both Peterhead and Inverness whilst growing up. I know how cold it gets and frostfree windscreen moisture free interior when starting up early on a frosty morning.
Good god it sounds like an advert for somebody :-D.

Aye the Bloo Toon was pretty nippy even in summer Kenny I think the coldest place I ever lived.. must have been somnething to do with the sea being on 3 sides and the wind blowing non stop..Even Shetland was warmer!!

The results so far.. well it hasn't really been cold enough to make that much difference.. and the car's been in the garage.. nights on Sat and Sun.. so the garage has been at 7C at 5am and the preheater has been on for 30 mins each day. The temp gauge doesn't register heat till I'm about 2 miles into the journey which is about 5 miles before it normally does and the guage rises much more quickly reaching close to peak about 7 or 8 miles into the 13 mile journey.
It seems that the circulation impeller doesn't seem to be as effective as I had thought it would be.. I had thought it would work continuously until all the water was at 50C but it appears that it heats and moves the water but not fast enough to keep the impeller moving continuously so you an hear it switching off for a couple of minutes before switching on again and I'm not convinced all the water has got to 50C.. I'll have to get a thermometer out and measure it.
I'll try it again on the nights and hopefully it'll be a bit colder. although the forecast seems to indicate its going to warm up (relatively) for the next few days.
As for the MPG it looks like it'll be about 60 on this tank 600 miles at 1/4 tank about 730 red light I'm hoping.. but thats been skewed by the the new straight through exhaust .. and I've had amost an hour of running at about 2500 RPM after both times I refilled the coolant.. and if it gets colder the nex tank will be skewed by the winter tyres.. I've resisted putting them on as the daytime temps hve been 8-10 C.
Watvh this space.....

Update.. Well the nights turned out to be a lot warmer than forecast 10C and 8C after a little bit of 2C earlier in the 2nd night.
So the first test in anger was this morning -2C.. I left the heater on for 1 hr.. as it doesn't heat and pump all the time I wanted to be sure the water would be at 50C the Temp guage started moving about 2 min after starting the car and it was almost at full temp by the time I got 5 miles down the road as opposed to the guage starting to move at 5-6 miles and just getting to full temp at 13ish by the time I get to work.
mpg was 57 last tank

I have been wondering for a while regards hose sizing. IIRC from way, way back(!) the flow through an orifice is proportional to the 4th power of the diameter, and this of course ignores pipe friction. I was wondering if larger dia pipe could be placed over the original (and sealed using Hylomar or similar) on every join. even using a short length of 15mm copper constitutes yet another restriction. This is, of course, dependent on whether the larger pipe bend radius can be accomodated in such a congested area. If it would allow the heater to run continuously or not remains to be seen

There were plastic joiners in the local car part place... but they looked even more restrictive than the copper.. As they pointed out .. the pipe isn't even 16mm its 15.5mm which is why the copper seemed to fit so well. As for the bends the way I routed the pipe, led to a very gentle bend with no chance of kinking.
