Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
leave it there or get a reproduction one from when the car was brand-new.
That's what I'll be doing with my two Xantias... For my V6 I'm going to get a reproduction July 1964 disc...
July is my birthday month and my V6 appears to have been first registered in 1963 according to its number plate.
It was a very early pre-production prototype
Likewise my Activa will be getting a July 1996 disc..
No need with my C1 - it is still on its original tax disc...

Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
I've just thought of something..
It may have been aired earlier in this topic but how are we to know now when our tax has expire with no disc to remind us?
I can see lots of people who simply and innocently overlook the renewal date to be penalised with juicy fines and points...

Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
What about hire cars, company pool cars, and that sort of thing?
I know you're supposed to be able to check online, but suppose you have no signal?
I can see a test case coming soon...

Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
I suspect there's legislation to cover that already.
My discs are already in the bin from both cars.

Although we all do get the postal reminders, if someone is working away from home for a while, or moves house they might miss their post.MikeT wrote:Jim, I get a postal reminder. Doesn't everyone?
So I might keep a note in the glove box, or on the drivers sun visor, of when it's due as we are all so used to having it to refer to.

Google/Yahoo calender works well too.
Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
Just set up a direct debit and forget about it. That's what I've done. Yeah, it's a few quid more (or actually cheaper than it was if you're a six monther! )

Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
In a classic bit of Government joined up thinking, disc went digital on 1st Oct, but DD option not available until 1st Nov....
So those buying in Oct have to buy 6 or 12 months, then start DD for next one. I think the charge is 5% for DD rather than 10% for 6 months as it used to be. I'll probably put ours on DD to save the admin - only about £15 extra in total across the 2 cars.

Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
You can use DD for Oct if you dare brave a queue of oldies in the post office and pay the first month there I believe...

Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
Call me old-fashioned but I'd still far rather pay mine up-front once a year... Like I do my poll tax and all insurances...
I'm not a lover of DDs at all... I try to avoid them whenever I can... I only have a very few for things that to my utter annoyance can only be done with a DD and I hope VED never gets that way..
Actually a DD for my C1 would be interesting. £0 per month ....
In fact I'm really curious to see how that works when I do renew the C1 VED. Do I actually have to pay £0 for it in a formal transaction or are DVLA sufficiently on the ball with that one?

Re: Alternative to Tax Disc
I'm not sure. I'll tell you in March when the "tax" on the DRK runs out.
