The sump on swmbo's Focus is tiny. It had a layer of gunge and the oil pickup was a disgrace.

Mike - I think Lighty said the van engines have a bigger oil capacity....

We've got away with it I think.... got a new vac pump fitted which restored the brake operation. Engine runs OK, no untoward noises, pulls OK, turbo seems to be OK =D> Will whip the vac pump off again in a few hundred miles to see the state of the inlet filter. If it fouls up again, it will be getting Lighty's treatment of ripping the sump strainer out....

This is SWMBO's car, so it doesn't do that many miles - and we have now got transport for the eldest to get to school, so it's not getting killed on the school run at the moment either  Might be a couple of weeks before it needs to come off. This weekend is hopefully wheel bearing on 307 anyway (and filter change, so I will take the vac pump of that and see what state it's in!).

The inverse of a TORX bit - ie the stud has the star on the end of it, and the socket has a start shaped hole in it: like these

It's blocked up again, as lighty predicted it would....

SWMBO is down at my Parent's, so it will be getting recovered there (Kendal) and I will have to go down and de-sump it - and rip the strainer out this time. My Parents are not there, and they only moved in a few weeks ago, so that will endear them to the neighbours no doubt :rofl2:

I had noticed it was bit noisier of late, but it didn't seem to have changed much in the last few weeks so I thought it would be OK for this trip, then I was going to do it before May bank holiday when we are away to the peaks, but fate, as usual, has intervened #-o

I think these engines are a pile of crap. It's a toss up between blown turbos, gunged up strainers and sump, siezed injectors or sheared injector hold down bolts. It's a lottery which one gets you first although I did read that later engines are supposed to be better I certainly won't be rushing out to get another.

Running again.... I can be sure the strainer won't block up again  Next time the low P light comes on, the engine will be scrap

Had a funny as well though - the fuel gauge and mileage disappeared from the screen. After taking the battery off and it still not being there, it was only then that it occurred to me there might a 'dark' button for the screen, and SWMBO had been pressing various buttons trying to find the way to stop the handbrake coming on automatically when it was getting towed....found it, and fuel gauge restored  =D>

I sure am glad that mine fell down a big hole and the insurance helped me out of it into a 2ltr.....seems like its a total toss up.

Glad you got it going again Richard! =D> [-o<

You really have not had much luck with that engine have you... you're something of a glutton for punishment when it comes to 1.6HDi's  In the same position I would have flicked it on by now... (saying that I did hold onto a car with a dying gearbox for rather a long time...)

Is that the same car that needs the lower swivel joint doing ? Are you still wanting to try the Clarke impact driver on it ? I still haven't even removed the shrink wrap from the box yet, too busy renovating until now...

Its the VOLVOs with these engines that do not have ANY issues these engines at all...The dealers are advised at service on Volvos to check injector Post Bolt tightness at each service to prevent blow by! Fords and PSA dont, and they have the largest in the "spares repairs turbo blown" category!

We had a 1.6 C5 hdi, and then at 115k was ok and did have an injector blow by. I replaced the injector seal immediatly. We then sold it to my cousin.. I saw the car last weekend now at 140k and still all ok! With pleanty of poke!

There is a link between injector blow past and carbon soot, that gets past the injector TOP Oil seals at the top of the injector tubes into the oil.. The other issues I found with these is the Sump from the outside has an INDENTED Oil drain! This firstly at oil change can leave about half a litre of old oil in, then in the twin cam head theres a lot of "Dead Areas" of un drainable oil areas, which to me looks that almost a total of 1 litre of old oil can remain in the engine at each oil change in which most owners will note that after a drain and change it goes black instantly! Though not a direct cause of failiure could contribute.

I actually have sucombe to the engines a little, and they are ok to work on! Its a nice compact unit, but it does have serious stupid design faults . The Injector post bolts really are silly and the threaded rods are stupidly thin and just simply not strong enough to tighten down to hold the injector in. Surfice to say, id be increadably tempted to buy a 1.6 C5 and see how long one could last with my milage I do..

My 1.6hdi is on 110k now, no issues to report and running like clockwork. Only the 75bhp but it goes pretty well for it. No Dpf on mine so happy there.

I've certainly thought about trading it, but to get another is at least 5k - and that would still have the same engine. 2.0 versions are not that common and most are EGS  To get into to the DV6C which is allegedly better, requires 2011 on, and that is getting on towards 10k to change...more than I would want to spend at present! Better the devil you know and all.... Interestingly, the 'new' ones are available at around 14k with 10-14k miles, must be ex rental I guess. If can get another 20k out of this one, should be able to pick up a new one for a reasonable price.
