No, not suggesting you take them out, which I'm guessing is a bit of a pain. Was thinking initially of just checking that you've got voltage on the busbar when you operate the key to switch the glowplugs on. This would at least indicate the glowplugs' relay is working. Assuming it is, you might then consider checking a couple of the glowplugs individually. if you've 2 glowplugs functionong, then I'd expect it in the warmer months to churn and cough, and finally burst into life. You shouldn't have use Easy Start all the time. Was going to ask if you have fuel at the injectors, but of course yes, or it wouldn't fire up with the Easy Start.

If it's smoking on cranking then it's not an air leak problem. It's either the plugs, the valve clearances, or the timing. If it's done 150k+ then my money would be on the valves....

its only just gone over 100k - I`ll be taking the plugs out next , and if they are shot (again) then replace the timing circuit

Check the relay for the glowplugs.
Son's 306 had similar symptoms and it was just corrosion on the connector to the relay.
Bit of a cleanup and it was fine again.

It was the box on it's own, fixed to the battery panel.
