You may have to feel for where the screw holes are (on the back of the steering wheel), as I think there is a cover of some sort.

For the glovebox, did you get the 2 bottom screws that are just above "70" in the diagram above? (I think they are covered by the felt lining).

Just leave the heater control box hanging, and push it in (slightly up or down) past the surround as you pull the dashboard out.

Turn the steering wheel through 90° and the scres are accessible at the back, T35 I think.

I've only had XII but this may help?:

Glovebox has torx screws under the felt as well as the visual ones - I think there's 9 altogether ? [Edit - diagram added but doesn't really show screws]

Heating box should be slack enough to remove the metal clips off the control cables - try moving the sliders to give a little more slack?
Thanks - I've managed to get the glove box off now - I was missing the two screws under the felt, also I was being too gentle pulling the top out.

The heater control box is out now too - the problem was I hadn't noticed you have to remove the top plastic cover to gain access to the top two bowden cables. One of them is of course bent and not working for a couple of years now so I'll be able to fix that on reassembly.
Airbag is retained by two 25 torx screws from the rear of steering wheel (1/2 lock each way for access)
Are you absolutely sure its a T-25 ?

I cannot find anything that will engage properly in those holes. I've tried T15, T20, T25, T27, T30 and T35 - none of them give any proper sense of engagement, nor do the security torx variants.

Unfortunately I only have a multi-set with the little barrel joiners so I can only assume the barrel is fouling on something and that I need a dedicated torx screw driver with a single piece small diameter shank to have any hope of getting it undone.

However I'd need to know for certain what size it is or perhaps buy a selection around that size range as I do need some dedicated torx drivers.

Just checked and on my XII they are torx 30 and I have quite a lot of room so a magnetic bit holder should slide in  sorry for my error (also they are slightly angled towards the centre of the wheel - I normally look through the windscreen whilst engaging)

Thanks - after I saw Stickyfinger's post I tried T-30 again but still no joy. I think the issue is that my T-30 bit is very short and only sticks a little bit out of the barrel adaptor compared to the picture above and the barrel is being fouled by something. I have a long shank T25 and I can feel that goes about 20mm further in before it bottoms than the short one.

So I don't have anything suitable. I see Screwfix has a nice little set of individual screwdrivers available for £14 which has T10, T15, T20, T25, T30 and T40, which is all the common sizes in that range so I'll go over and grab one of these sets tomorrow:

Simon try to get a T-50 as well for the steering wheel bolt (if you haven't got one already ?)

I've got a set like these (you might struggle with screwdriver clearance)

Steering wheel bolt ? Is it not a hex nut ? I don't think I have any T-50.

Do you mean screwdriver clearance for the screws on the back of the steering wheel ?

I use a set like these...if tight, I just put a bit of tube on the short section to extend it and give more leverage.

No it's a T-50 bolt

Yes but I had a brain fart and you should be OK if you undo them from below the steering wheel shroud #-o

I've ordered the angled torx set you linked to from ebay - it looks like I won't get it until Thursday, although I probably won't have time to work on the car until next weekend anyway as we're out most of tomorrow.

I'll grab the torx screwdrivers from Screwfix as well so I have both options - I've needed a few more torx drivers of various sizes for a while now as I often find myself struggling with the bit and barrel joiner ones I have as they are often too short and too fat to reach into equipment I'm trying to work on.

The steering wheel is held by a 22mm or 23mm nut on the S1 Xantia, changed to a torx screw on the S2.

Aha, I'm not going crazy. :) I've had the steering wheel off a S1 Xantia before and remembered a hex nut but it was 15 years ago on a model without an airbag...

Thanks.

To be honest the part of the job I'm dreading the most is dealing with the window scuttle as it's in absolutely appalling state and will just break into a dozen pieces as soon as I try to remove it. (It's already split into many pieces and there are cracks running everywhere on the parts that haven't already separated)

I still don't really understand why it needs to come off as I helped my Dad remove the dashboard from his 1994 Xantia (again, 15 years ago) and don't remember removing the window scuttle so I'm going to leave it for last and only remove it if I can't find a way to work around it.

https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... hp?t=28512 - Good description from Jim half way down page 2.

Also viewtopic.php?t=52484 [with scary pictures!] In here Paul (citroenxm) suggests you can do it without removing the scuttle, but if you are chasing a water leak that's no matter. CitroenCrazy has a link to a doc, but it's broken, I'll PM him and see if he can send it to me, and I can up load it somewhere.
