Simon,

A couple of questions if you dont mind.

Does this button on your car have any discernable effect? ie does your car make the low speed noise either forward or reverse. Mine doesnt even though pressing the button does activate the little light on the switch.

Also, you may know I abandoned all efforts to do the Nissan Connect thing. Never missed it can happily do without it. I'm sure you will have it singing and dancing, but is there a subscription you have to take out for the connectivity?

I wonder if that switches on an external speaker to allow people to hear when the car is approaching (maybe by playing the sound of an engine through that speaker)? I know that some electric cars are almost completely silent at low speeds.

Yes the button works on my car. The button is actually a pedestrian warning sound disable button. So when the light is lit the sound is disabled. When you start the car it (by law) always defaults to the sound being enabled, which is the light being off.

If you're driving around in urban areas where pedestrians are likely to walk in front of you it's probably best to leave it on, however if you're trying to come and go from the house at early hours and don't want to bother the neighbours you can turn the sound off, which makes it almost silent when moving slowly.

The noise comes from the front of the car somewhere and sounds like a tone which varies in pitch with road speed and isn't particularly audible from inside the car I find, however you'll hear it if you wind the windows down and drive along beside a wall.

The tone stops when you're stationary and also stops when you go above 20mph. To confuse matters the motor itself (or maybe the drive inverter) under the bonnet also makes a tone like noise at lower speeds so when the pedestrian warning sound is active there are actually two different speed sensitive tones that are audible...

The warning sound only operates in drive not in reverse. I guess for it to be useful in reverse there would need to be a separate speaker at the rear and they decided not to do that for whatever reason. Personally I think a reversing warning would be more useful than a forwards moving warning!

I haven't got mine working yet, to set it up you create a You+Nissan account (which I've done) and then enter the VIN number of the car into the account to assign the car to your account - when I try to do this it says the VIN is already assigned to another account - eg the previous owner's...

So I've emailed Nissan support to see if they can delete the car from the previous owners account. From what I've heard on speakev they will do this with a scanned copy of the V5C to prove I'm the new keeper of the car, however last time I contacted Nissan support by email it took them a few days to respond, so we'll see.

In the mean time the previous owner could theoretically check my cabin temperature and battery charge, stop/start my charges and turn my climate control on and off...

No there is no subscription cost to use the service. From what I've heard it's a bit unreliable and flakey anyway (poorly run servers probably) so I'm not expecting much, but if it works after a fashion and is free, why not ? And I'd rather sort out the fact that the previous owner still has theoretical access to the car now that I know the car is still attached to someone else's account...

By the way, are you aware of the strut top swimming pool design flaw in all Leaf's Neil ?

If you open the bonnet and look at both ends of the plastic drain skirting under the windscreen you'll see the ends can be unclipped by hand - behind them are the strut tops.

You'll find the nut is submerged in what is probably a swimming pool of water... Mine are the same - sitting in accumulated drainage water and starting to rust a bit. (Not badly yet fortunately)

As soon as the weekend comes I'll be soaking that water up and putting a huge blob of grease over the nut around the recess. The long term solution is to get some snap on caps to deflect the water away from the strut top - which are available on ebay.

I would have to look back and check, but I never even opened the bonnet for 2 or three months! When I did found there was an accumulated pine needles crisis, but strangely that was the clue to me discovering who the previous owner was :-D

It does happen on the Micra and I adopted the blob of vaseline approach.....its ages since I had a proper tin of grease :-D

Thanks Mick! How much is a tin of grease these days? I have lost touch. Last one I had was black stuff molybendum (close molybdenum grease) or something like that! lasted years and there is probably still a scraping left.

Day four driving the Leaf and the brakes seem to have settled in a lot. It's still a relatively firm pedal - certainly compared to the soft pedal on the Ion, but the "lost travel" I was noticing before any braking occurred seems to be mostly gone (maybe that "brake pedal calibration" process wasn't just a placebo) and the brakes have a lot better bite now - if you push a bit harder it stops well whereas the first day I had the car it didn't seem to want to stop.

I suspect the previous owner was very light on the brakes (making too much of an effort to drive economically) and/or the car has sat for a couple of months between use, and we all know what happens to disc brakes that aren't used sufficiently to keep their friction surfaces in tip top shape...

The tyres I'm not particularly happy with - I think they're Dunlop low rolling resistance summer tyres, and they don't have a lot of tread left so while still MOT legal (just in the case of the front left) on the way to work this morning (heavy rain) I was finding when I was setting off from the traffic lights that any standing water was resulting in instant wheel spin if I didn't feather the accelerator carefully on takeoff. They feel fine in the dry but not in the wet.

The car does have a lot of torque off the line but I think these worn tyres just don't grip very well in standing water so from a safety perspective I'm strongly considering bringing the Michelin CrossClimate+ swap forward to MOT time in September, and get them to fit the tyres and do the MOT at the same time. It's a fair wad of cash up front due to the particular rim size but the difference in grip and safety especially in winter will be huge, and they should last me a good 3 years or so. Crossclimate+ seem to get very good reviews.

The Vredestein Quatrac 5 on the Ion made a huge difference in standing water and snow compared to summer tyres, it was night and day over the worn summer tyres that it initially had, which I ditched within a few months of buying the car. I was driving circles around other people who were stuck in the snow the first winter we had the car...

Have a look at ATS for Cross Climate, Simon - they seem to have a permanent offer for free fitting which saves £40 or so, and they do Topcashback at 4% which makes it slightly less painful! They grip and roll well, but they are quite soft, so don't expect long life!!

Is it the CrossClimate or CrossClimate+ you've used ? According to this the + changes the rubber compound to one that is longer wearing:

https://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/W ... er%20range.

The Quatrac 5's were a pretty soft tyre too and I managed to get 25k+ miles out of them on the Ion, although they did wear down a lot on the outside edge on the narrow front size. From the reviews I've read the CrossClimate+ is a longer wearing tyre than the Quatrac 5.

I do about 12k miles a year at the moment.

Reading tyre reviews is hard work - everyone seems to have an opinion and one person will praise a tyre's attributes and someone else will say it's rubbish! Even professional reviewers seem to have very different opinions and scientifically conducted tests come up with different results. Very hard to make sense of without trying the tyre yourself, but once you buy you're stuck with it until it wears out.

I did like the Quatrac 5 - they performed really well in snow and rain, decent in summer and they are a bit cheaper than the Michelin but they had problems with abnormal wear on the shoulders and some of them were slightly oval shaped leading to a slight vibration that wouldn't balance out hence pushing me to try Michelin this time. I think their manufacturing quality control let them down a little bit.

I spoke to Nissan customer support today who have raised a ticket to have the car deleted off the previous owners account, which they say will take "up to 48 hours". In other words, phone us on Monday if it hasn't happened by then. :P So far they've just asked for my contact details, license plate and VIN number but haven't asked to see the V5C...

Checked the ones on the current C4 - they are pluses. I suspect that is all you will get now as there was no choice of plus or not! New rears are just over 7mm. Fronts are down to 3 after 15k miles, so that suggest a life of about 20k on the front, which is more than comparable to the factory fit Michelin primacy, which were well worn at 9k when they were replaced as one had a cut in the sidewall.
