Meanwhile time for the Falcon to play...I have supplied the last 8 (at least) "whatsthisthen :?: 's" for this thread. Mick a couple before that. Time to spread the load of content creation.

Lets have some new "whatsthisthen :?: 's" from some new posters. I already know the answers to almost all of the ones I post up. :-D
Fancy starting the next one Jim :?: I hardly got a chance to get warmed up on the widget before you stepped in an solved it. Dont think I would have got it very quickly, so a bit of excellent work there Jim, possibly with some inside knowledge of the question setter:-D

Sorry to have been not pulling my weight in terms of bringing in fresh What's this-is-es, err, more What's this then-if-ication.

Quite a few interesting things I see are when I'm alone in the car so chance of (safely) taking a photo isn't possible.

As promised :)

What are these? Their use and informal name please ;)

As a small clue, they are in no way connected with any of my usual activities... I saw them, puzzled over them and was then told what they are...

EDIT: They are about two and a half inches in diameter

First thought was 'Pomfrit' (Pontefract) cakes, but too big.

Weapons grade frisbees?

Edit: Got me thinking about the name Pontefract.
The name "Pontefract" originates from the Latin for "broken bridge", formed of the elements pons (bridge) and fractus (broken). Pontefract was not recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, but it was noted as Pontefracto in 1090, four years after the Domesday survey.
Much as I suspected.

I think with a relatively new if not completely new whatsthisthen :?: content provider, that it should be given a bit of air time before the coup de grace.
I will put forward my answer in an unfathomable cryptic.
I think there is some link in an obscure sort of way to this and also to this

They look like something that isn't worth much and probably need slinging? :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Let me decipher my cryptic.

Basically there was a link to one of my "brick" posts- Nori Accrington, blessed with a top quality local clay which made hard as "iron" bricks.

The second was a sparrowhawk downing a pigeon.

so Clay Pigeon was what you were looking for I think, and yes used in Clay Pigeon Shooting. The Americans may call them something different.

Neil

PS wiki tells me some may still refer to them as a "bird" harking back to the days before 1875 when live pigeons were used.

Continuing the animal theme, the ones in the picture are small and intended to be fired low, just above grass height for low-level practice... For this reason I'm told they're informally known as 'Rats'.

I've only tried clay pigeon shooting once in my life and that was getting on 40 years ago now... As I recall, I enjoyed it and would never say no to another opportunity to shoot up :)

Cheating was no help then. Google Lens informed me that they were motorcycle tank knee grips.
Would be unfortunate if someone were to let a 12-bore loose on them.
