Higher!

MattBLancs wrote: 17 Aug 2024, 13:43 I am leaning more towards 406 saloon now
Is that is your final answer Matt? I think the wheels add the extras for the letters for the "trim" after your guess.

I deciphered the numberplate :-D

I tried copying and enlarging but I lost all of the numberplate contrast and very little of the wheels. So which software could you get to the numberplate with Neil? :-D

I'll have a punt at 406 Saloon 2.0 HDi ? :-D

Doesn't look like a 605, not big enough (at the risk of getting into a Dougal / Father Ted "these are small, those are far away" type discussion!!)

I'll stick with 406. Mick's guess seems to be about 60% of all 406's, to I'll take the other main chunk and say it's a 1.9 XUD (or DW8 - think you could have your 406 with a piddling 71bhp if suitably masochistic!)

Simple tools on Microsoft Photos, adjusting light/clarity/colour/size through a number of iterations. It isn't particularly clever.

Then to quote another TV game show catchphrase (literally) "Say what you see" :-D

Look it up on one of the many free check sites

Ah, what Neil posted is vastly clearer than what I can see, I wonder if the forum is giving me a lower resolution "large" image because I am viewing on my phone?

For comparison, this is as good as it got in the large image

I think we are close enough. DVLA site doesn't give the extras on the description

Autotrader thinks its this

"Peugeot 406 2.0 Turbo SRi 4dr (sunroof) 1998"

It's Lucas, so could be something of English origin, but quite different, unconventional.

So I'm guessing:

The TR5 the "First British production sports car with petrol injection" according to the original marketing bumpf. If I said under the bonnet of the Whatsthisthen? there was most likely to be a carburettor or two, a slight adjustment to your very close first thoughts would produce the actual version and model name.

Indeed it would. Well done Mick, TR250 it is :-D
Strangely enough the same car has had an outing on I spy classic Cars and Bikes a couple of years ago when Eagle Eyed Gibbo picked out an error in the sales guff video at the auction. The voice over described the Carbs as Twin Strombergs but they were in fact Twin Su's.
Gibbo2286 wrote: 26 Oct 2022, 10:07 Confusing! The car has twin SU not Stromberg carbs.

Do the strombergs look obviously more stumpy but similar :?:
You helpfully dug out this to confirm...

Original Sales Details...

The car was converted to right-hand drive, the chassis reunited with the restored bodywork and the car was treated to a £7,500 respray. The rare original Surrey Top was reconditioned and painted and the interior was totally transformed with MX5 seats trimmed in two-tone leather, a new set of door cards, rear covers and carpets, reconditioned instruments in a Walnut dash and much more. The engine was completely rebuilt and fitted with SU carbs, the gearbox and overdrive were reconditioned and a new clutch fitted. As with any total restoration, it's the little things like clips and brackets and small chrome parts that take the time to source and fit but the TR was eventually finished. Our vendor believes his costs were in excess of £43,000 and it certainly shows. Since it was finished, according to the smart new white speedometer, the car has covered just 908 miles.
Spend £43,000 sell for £31,000, and only do 908 miles in it :-D, it's an expensive hobby not a business!
