I knew the car would not be much of a challenge but where is it?

It looks very much like one of my favourite spots in North Devon. Woody Bay, just above Lynton...

Also known as Valley of the Rocks...

A visit there is wonderful, especially after the drive up Porlock Hill, the descent down into Lynmouth and the 1 in 3 climb up to Lynton and the hairpin bend...

There was a lovely little café there selling the most divine cream teas a while back...

You know Neil, despite my association with that region and all the times I've been there I've never taken a trip along the toll road! When I was a kid dad always refused to because it cost money whereas Porlock Hill was free!

I really must one of these days but as far as I know it's the only one...

Thinking on, I don't see to much benefit in the toll road as heavy traffic and caravans still has Countisbury Hill (down into Lynmouth) to negotiate which although not as twisty is still almost as steep as Porlock Hill and then after that there's the hill with the really sharp hairpin between Lynmouth and Lynton to negotiate and in my experience that's the worst hill of them all...

I am not going to pose a whatsthisthen? for the picture below, its a fridge magnet....

Image

The remarkable thing about the above fridge magnet is that it has been on our fridge for the past 4 years and I haven't paid it the slightest attention.

The reason that it is there is that a customer had been staying with family who run a bed and breakfast in North Devon, and just brought it back cos there was a Northumberland connection. Apparently the previous feral goats just weren't tough enough so they re-introduced some wild goat stock from the Cheviots to roam the Valley of the Rocks!

So how"did "French Car Chat" get round to the Valley of the Rocks? Well you have to blame

ImageImage

Which provided the material for the nostagic whatsthisthen? of the Mark VII Jaguar ploughing through the ford in North Devon, and the little MG waiting at the toll gate to pay its 1s and 6d.

Quite Remarkable :!: as David Coleman might have said

Here's a bit of an experiment for me....my first thumbnail! Had to adjust the settings on my photobucket album so it displayed the option of an "IMG thumb" but here it is.

Image

(looks like when it displays in photobucket you will have to use the zoom-in tool to read the article)

I realise that not everyone will be fascinated with a September 1955 copy of "Practical Motorist and Motor Cyclist" but there is quite an interesting piece on the "On the Road-Current Chatter about nothing in particular" page about "Flashing Lights" which is marginally relevant to discussions earlier on in the thread about the current crop of rear lights. It also has a marginal French connection with the picture being of the ancient gateway to Vendome, altough the vehicle shown is a good old British pre-war Austin 7 which has somehow made its way into deepest France.

Now we could have a linked whatsthisthen? with this cockpit shot.

Not a Chevy Impala Malcolm, but talking of tail lights the Impala of the 50's certainly had a stunning rear :-D

you are on the right track though, but the car in question was built in France
