ok. How about the ghost of lord Doneraile being chased by hounds through the grounds of the Grove mansion because he changed a chapel into a kitchen.

At least the grove has a history page! So we have George Stubbs doing his famous horse portraits, Captain Cooks Black Walnut tree

https://www.thegrove.co.uk/about/

1753-1790s: The house was acquired by The Honourable Thomas Villiers, Earl of Jersey and British Ambassador to France, who became the very first Earl of Clarendon. During this time the sprawling grounds were a favourite spot for artist George Stubbs, who visited the stables regularly to create his famous horse portraits. The Grove was also visited by Captain Cook, who presented one of the Earls with a sapling of the newly-discovered Black Walnut Tree. This magnificent tree now towers over the Terrace, beside the Lounges.

Now I find myself in a dilemma!! It is without doubt a claim to fame to have had George Stubbs working there. Likewise the Black Walnut tree so on that basis I think you deserve the 100 points I offered Neil! Well done! :-D However there are still two more claims to fame which both happened in this century, and in fact one of them is likely to happen again!! So a further 100 points each for those two claims and the clue is they each have a different sporting connection!! :-D

Where's the footy pitches though, or was the idea to relax the lads with golf, swimming etc!

Well done Neil, that's the first sporting connection and another 100 points for you. In fact the England team have been using the hotel almost since the redevelopment, which was completed in time for the millenium, and my friends have been down to wave the team off on many a match day!! Now just one more claim to fame and two TV appearances to go!! :-D

Two other Canal related TV Shows,

The Childrens program Rosie and Jim (and the old Ragdoll) may have pootled under that bridge in one of the episodes.
and the Documentary series Canals the Making of a Nation in one of the six episodes https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0689qmh

Is the other claim to fame also a particular guest or guests staying at the hotel?

That's 50 points for Canals, the Making of a Nation. Rosie and Jim may be correct but not what is on the card so no points unless proof is provided! A clue to the third program is that its presenter made his name as a carpenter on a renovation show!! As for the other claim it is possible, even likely, that it involved staying at the hotel but that is not the actual claim. It is the reason for staying that you are looking for!! :-D

Correct and the final 100 point answer is nailed!! excellent work!! Now one more TV show!! :-D

The coup de gras! Well done indeed!! It was series 1 episode 9, Abbotts Langley to Uxbridge. He actually took a local boatman aboard Dover who told him all about the Grove and the Cassiobury estate, which is why it stuck in my mind. He started his TV career working with Tommy Walsh on Challenge Tommy Walsh which you probably do remember? The final 50 points go to the Northumbrian Branch!! :-D

Not much of a Challenge with this one. Quite ordinary.

Correct. Although I don't think Mercedes allowed "Cosworth" to be emblazoned over the engine.

Bit of a Hertfordshire tangent, this lot have one on their books, and they do fetch a surprising price.

A very nice car that one, the farm they are stored in is about 4 miles from my house in Letty Green and they do get some good motors in there!! :)
