Right country Van...thanks for joining in.
So that narrows down the alternatives considerably. The car itself was a bit of a saviour for that particular German car maunfacturer at the time.
As far as the quizzes go (which is where it sprang from) that would leave us
German Sports Cars of 1940s and 1950s
German Sports Cars of 1960s
German Sports Cars of 1970s
German Sports Cars of 1980s
German Sports Cars of 1990s
German Sports Cars of 2000s
German Sports Cars of 2010s
from the look of this 85.714% of those decades would not apply

Click on the right quiz and lets put this one to bed....please!
Regards Neil

Re: Whatsthisthen?.entries invited
Anyone familiar with the German Hillclimb Championship of 1960? Well this bloke won it driving a variant of our whatsthisthen? at the age of 60.

His son was also a reasonably well known racing driver and shared his name.
If you put superglue on each of your palms and clasped them together you would have a very strong clue to the name if you don't recognise the picture!
Last chance....come on folks join in and identify the car!
Regards Neil

Stickyfinger

It certainly looks like Alasdair....
Not a clue on the car but it's an attractive little thing though

Many years ago (late 1960s) when I was at college during my apprenticeship, many of us could only afford two wheeled powered transport but one of my classmates had something very similar to this. It was powered by a 600cc flat twin engine.
So my guess is a BMW of some sort...

Very Very Warm Ted thanks for joining in, just a little step further what would you get if you gave it a longer stroke or a wider bore!
As for the inability of the FCF faithful to get this little clue, you've got to be winding me up, its obvious!!!
One further piece of Whatsthisthen advice...............If you put superglue on each of your palms and clasped them together you would have a very strong clue to the name if you don't recognise the picture!
Do the QUIZ!!!
Regards Neil

Would never have guessed a BMW... Far too attractive... Possibly one of the most attractive BMWs I've seen in ages...

Many thanks for your intervention Ted to save the day

Regards NeilWiki page on it here for more reading
"The BMW 700 is a small rear-engined car which was produced by BMW in various models from August 1959 to November 1965. It was the first BMW automobile with a monocoque structure. The 700 was a sales success at a time when BMW was close to financial ruin.[3] The 700 was also successful in its class in motorsport, both in its stock form and as the basis of a racing special called the 700RS.
More than 188,000 were sold before production ended in November 1965.
..and our German "Bergkönig" also gets a mention in the motorsport section of that article for anyone who hasn't worked out his name yet

Re: Whatsthisthen?.entries invited

Would be a litttle disrespectful not to credit our German racing car driver with his name. Still stuck?
I'll give you a Hans....yes it's none other than Hans Stuck

Well it looked familiar & I knew it wasn't an NSU (Sport Prinz) - quite forgotten BMW were still making glorified microcars then.

Yes sorry, couldn't get the link to work so just deleted the post
It was the shot of the boot tools in John Steed's old Bentley on this page.
It looks like something you might hit to get the wheels off at a guess.

This page gives the history of the vehicle, and if you page down to April 2006, click on the thumbnail and you get a bigger picture.

That looks like a hub puller Neil. Image is a bit small to see closely.
