That's a place I really want to visit... I may get my wish one day as a friend plans to move to Berwick... I'll miss her but will have good reason to visit the area!

Re: Nice places to stop off at.....
In a random sort of trip out, after setting out late, enjoying a Marks and Sparks picnic here...
...you are faced with a left or a right turn. Right it was and up the A1 heading for Berwick, one of our regular day-out places. Got so far up and thought never been to Holy Island for a bit and turned off for out 5 mile detour down to the causeway and onto the island.
Didn't realise it was the "Lindisfarne music Festival" (held on the mainland side of the causeway) which generated a huge traffic jam. Stopped off at the Barn at Beal for Coffee where this pic was taken, for around 45 mins or so and by that time the jam has eased and we got onto the island. Came straight back off it when the minimum car parking charge was £6.50. No way a thrifty person like me was going to pay that . Paid nothing at nearby Bamburgh/ Seahouses and Beadnell (partly because I know where to) the other places featured on the Northumberland quartet of pics.

Re: Nice places to stop off at.....
Amid the chaos in Elstree we went for lunch at another of our hostelries in Hertfordshire. This time it was Ye Olde Greene Man and they served up a very tasty meal. For desert the waitress asked me if I wanted a fork and I replied " A 5 iron may be more appropriate!"

Was the dessert worth the drive Mick?

The poor old "Pub/Cafe Gallery and the odd Hotel" thread feeling a bit neglected, as undoubtedly the more regularly posted "Nice places to stop off at...." gets the nod for the Maverick sweet tooth!

Re: Nice places to stop off at.....
I'm reading an Ann Cleeves book, "The Seagull" (which is a pub).
Most of her stuff is local, as are the TV series based on her books.
But one thing that was mentioned was Druridge Bay and the Drift Café. So well thought of by Neil.
Tempted to make a sojourn up there.
And another that came up in the Northern Echo, Blackhall Rocks.
That was a pretty dire place and used in "Get Carter"and "Alien 3", Ridley* Scott is a local lad and would know of the location.
Apparently cleaned up a lot and very pleasant now.
I vividly recall the bucket chain thing crossing the A19, that dumped the spill from Blackhall Colliery on the beach there.
*ironically, the spellcheck wanted to change that to "Ripley"

I watched the repeat of that at the weekend, in an earlier scene there was the sewer outflow pipe about a foot in diameter then the coal waste dumping, made me think about all the 'Privatised water companies polluting the sea." stories we get now.myglaren wrote: ↑02 Sep 2024, 20:18 I'm reading an Ann Cleeves book, "The Seagull" (which is a pub).

Re: Nice places to stop off at.....
You may recall this from the "Nice Places to Stop Off At" Archives
NewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑20 Jun 2024, 10:15 As the Alnmouth Fingerpost sign (here) proclaims The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a nice place to stop off at, and you will find many examples of its natural assets posted up by yours truly on many threads,
So a contrast, and an exception. From Tynemouth to Berwick upon Tweed the coastline is stunning. This very small section is not, It consists of not much more than a mile at most at the mouth of the River Lyne, but encompasses the area of the former Lynemouth Colliery, the former Alcan Aluminium Smelter, and its associated powersatation, a landfill site abutting the beach, a large Minewater Treatment site, and an orange watercourse emanating from that site across the beach and into the North Sea tainting it orange for hundreds of metres.
It forms part of the England Coastal Path great views, North and South, and an intended clean up in progress but a contaminated wasteland of its industrial past. Still lets say an "interesting" place to stop off at.
Enough words the pictures!
