Glad you got the welding sorted Chris. I have just welded up the notorious sill/jacking points on my Merc 190, they always go, roughly 4" square patches on the front and some minor welds on the rear. I sprayed Dynax s50 in. It was voted one of the top preventers, ahead of Dinitrol and Waxoyl. I find it much much better than Waxoyl, which I have used for years but I have found that it has not stopped the rust longer term. I can't find it in Aberdeen but I got it on e-bay and it comes in either 750mm cans or 5 litre containers. Can comes with a 12" flexible injection probe. Ideal for holes drilled in sills and covered with a grommet. I inject after the welding or you have a massive fire on your hands! Good thing about Mercs is they have a sill cover (which kind of causes the issue by trapping mud) but you don't need t worry about how pretty the repair is!

I sprayed above the rear subframe and all around the rear height correctors with it as it remains flexible and also injected to the rear door shut/sill area, but I get little rust "blemishes" showing through the paint on the seam joint which I have to "tidy up" every few months.

Yet to do inner Track joints, did both my outers for MOT in May - cheap at £9-10 a pop and quick to fit.... Dreading the inners as I have heard they are a pain.

When I do CV gaiters I get the stretchy boot over the cone with lots of spray grease on the cone. Quick job and its a good un.

Remains of the inner tie rod.

not going to do the CV gaiter as I can't see any signs of a hole, nor the deterioration thats mentioned in the MOT refusal.. I've cleaned up both N/S and O/S as good as new and no sighn of any hole or anything.
Thanks for the Dynax recomendation. I'll have a look at that.
Rick,
I got it tested here in Kemnay.. used to be Robert Dow's garage, great for the MOT's never had any problem with what he found and he made allowances for the age and the mileage of the car plus what he advised you to do ontop of the MOT advisories. But now he's retired and Brian, the Subaru man has taken it over.. plenty of space for his Subaru s now.
He marked everything in yellow crayon, and I found mark on the O/S ball joint.. I'm not convinced .. but I'm changing it anyway.. but 2 of us have scrutinised the cv gaitors and can't find anything wrong. I'll find out on Monday

OK Chris. Didn't know BD did MOT's. Thought he would have been more interested in flying machines . As you say, he has plenty space for the hot cars now. Hope you get it tested OK.

Well she passed the MOT yesterday despite me not having changed the CV gaiter and me finding that the other side bottom ball joint needed doing.. can't believe he missed that.
Rick.. plenty of space for hot cars but no space to park for the MOT.. its a Subaru heaven round there.. reckon he must be keeping some for spares.

Am I the only one who wants to put a big LOL at these prices?

£20 worth of mild steel, some decent tin snips and a hammer should do the job.

Personally I'd register over at the MOT testers forum and ask some questions relating to an MOT tester failing your car on the CV boots and you Not replacing them for a re-test and the fact that they passed on the re-test.
Looks very suspicious that, like the garage is trying it on a bit touting for work if you know I mean.
As I understand it they are not allowed to pry open rusty holes making them bigger or more obvious.

I used the MOT testers Forum last year when I had to proove that a headlight warning lamp was never fitted to a 2cv
The MOT station insisted that the car should have one and failed the car at the MOT.
I got proof from the Forum and took it to the MOT station who then phoned VoSA and I got my MOT certificate.
The computerized system is not perfect and has its flaws particularly with older cars.
Citroen Xantia S2 1.9 TD estate 189K soon to be broken for parts Jan 2017 headlamps & radiator fan assembly already spoken for & A 1987 Citroen 2CV6 special just for fun.
New addition Citroen C5 2.0 HDi Exclusive Hatch purchased 09/12/2016 with 83K on the clock.
