Maybe at heart, but the issue is really (usually) crud blocking the valve body.

Do you have any experience of the same problem with the 4HP20, or does the inability to drop the valve block out in-situ like the AL4 make such a diagnosis impossible ?

I've never touched a 4HP-20 inside. Many I've driven gave me the willies; they felt "wrong" in the lower range shifts (slight slurring). Not so bad as a late Magna autobox, if you drove any of them before sailing.

My 4HP-18 is starting to show its age, so that will likely be the next learning curve as I toggle between Dean's how-to and the American book on rebuilding Saab boxes.
