Normally I wouldn't worry about the contamination of the filter on the regulator. Remember that these regulators allow a lot of fuel to bypass the rail over a very long time and the filter is very small and very fine. A second hand unit is really a lottery ticket. You cannot tell the level of contamination unless perhaps by viewing it under a microscope. The first ones I replaced for the cutting out problem were about 4 years ago and so far the problem hasn't come back. At that time the vehicles would be between 5 and 8 years old. As regards the starting as far as I remember two complete turns are required for synchronisation. I'm not sure if fuel pressure monitoring is initiated before synchronisation occurs or not. Any vehicle I owned with one of these engines seemed to start after a different cranking period every time.

I had wondered that myself but the original regulator didn't have a filter, was of slightly different construction with a different part number - could be that it had something to compensate for the returning fuel. Maybe if I have to change it again I will find out. :?

I don't really know Peter. The regulator regulates pressure by varying the amount of fuel bypassing the rail and returning to the tank. Maybe the ones without the little thimble like filter on the end have something inside the hole. There is also the possibility of either electrical or mechanical defects within the regulator. If I get one of these which is giving problems then I will carry out an autopsy. I waste a lot of time dissecting failed components to either find out how they should work or why they failed. If the regulator cannot completely stop fuel from bypassing then starting problems are likely. If it cannot allow enough fuel to bypass then the cutting out problem can occur. The third piston deactivation if it fails may possibly cause the cutting out problem as well but only at high rpm. Slight running on after the ignition is turned off is a symptom of a blocked regulator.
Some of the newer pumps use a metering valve system. This reduces the flow of fuel into the high pressure pump. One advantage is that the power absorbed by the pump is reduced. The pump you're dealing with requires 4KW or more. I have some of the documentation but haven't looked at it for many years so the figures I am giving are from memory.

Bosch = in tank pump, and the reg is held in with 2 bolts. Siemens = pumped primer under the bonnet (no pump), and the reg has a hex and is screwed in. I'll have a look later and see if service.citroen lists different reg numbers.

There's only 1 part no in service.citroen covering a wide variety of models. Not to say that there aren't different regs on different cars of course....
