Peter,

Lesson learnt lately, I took a chance on a regulator that had been sat on my shelf for about 2 years assumed faulty.

Now Ive learnt that I CAN and must have three faulty regulators in a row all been in my car after each other.

I fitted this "unknown" regulator, and guess what! YES Sorted! NO cutting out.. For me, I think, personally, these regulators cant be visually checked, they MAY work if Driven "Peter N" Style, meaning nice and likely but could still have a fault like mine have.

Ive noticed that starting has also inproved too, and she now starts like a petrol, where as before it was taking about 6 turns, its more like 3..

So theres a first clue after fitting one, if it takes more then three turns to start its faulty!

Mum has bought me a NEW one to keep in the car, for 69.99, from Lithuenia...

An interesting lesson I have been on, which this could also mean that all pumps and injectors I have could well be perfectly fine!

I feel similarly Paul, the two regulators I have between them have shown up about every engine fault I have seen listed. I was outbid on that cheap one but I put in an offer for one of the others and got it cheaper! Whether its any good or not remains to be seen, I am still waiting for it. The seller has good feedback and seems to specialise in these regulators, every one he has sold gave good feedback.

I did look at the one from Lithuania and if I hadn't found this other cheap one would have given it a go - I may still have to, but will give this one a try.

I did find some metal filings in the one I took out but have already changed the lift pump and filter so hope it doesn't cause any more problems.

Strangely the 406 has done 220k and I have had no problems with that at all.

I have been told by one who knows things but I haven't tried it myself that you can remove the filter from the regulator and solve the cutting out problem. i have replaced regulators in the past for this fault. The fact that the filter is clogged isn't really a sign of anything in particular but i'm sure that careless filter changing might not help. This filter is probably finer than the actual fuel filter. Some of the replacement regulators (Bosch in a Meat & Doria box) didn't have any filter fitted. I have already posted details on this including pictures which have the filter shown. The main diagnostic tool required is a good magnifying glass. The regulator allows fuel to bypass the rail and return to the tank. The filter on the regulator is purely for the protection of the regulator. I would think that if the seat or needle on the regulator becomes contaminated then starting problems might occur but I do not have any hands on experience of this. Any of the regulators i changed were at least 5 years old and I never had to touch them again. On one occasion only it followed failure of the low pressure pump. The exact same engine and pump is found on Suzuki and Fiat as well. The Suzuki low pressure pump is external to the fuel tank. early ones were also prone to failure but were much easier to change than the Peugeot/Citroen ones.

The one I fitted on mine to solve my long on going issue was the sort with a hole in the END.. Some Ive seen have got an extension on them with a very fine sort of gause end..

Not sure I could see a filter to remove!

I couldn't see a filter either. The extension on the end seems to be a magnet Paul, that's where the bits of metal were stuck but how they get through the fuel filter I can't understand, I didn't see any in there when I changed it. As you have to remove the filter to get to the regulator I will have another look in it while its off.

Don't know what system the 406 has but it uses the same in tank pump, looks the same.

The gauze, magnet or whatever it looks like on the end of the regulator is the filter. The regulator with the hole in the end has no filter. The filter mesh is either 2 or 5 microns. The silver bit on the right is the filter.

Ah right, I thought the silver bit was solid metal so it must be fine. One of mine has it, the other just a hole.

Hi John

I was going to try the effect of removing the filter or blowing it out with compressed air which I might if the replacement doesn't arrive today.

Thanks for the Lexia offer, I will be out in the morning and will have visitors until mid afternoon but would be pleased to see you later if that's convenient. We are out in the sticks a bit but will give you directions if you can manage it.

The regulator arrived this morning, I fitted it and it started instantly, I took it on a 15 mile round trip - which is how far you have to go to get a newspaper round here - it drove perfectly but I now have two of the original faults back, it runs on when you stop it and its back in limp home mode, neither of which bother me as long as it keeps going.

Now you have a Limp Home Light on, or at least EML light on, putting the lexia on should now tell you something..

Its when theres no EML on that lexia wont help you much, like a starting issue.

When cranking over the lexia still showed me 100bar of pressure to 150bar, which should trigger a start so lexia was no help to me through all this cutting out, only the the OCR % was 97 which was causing the cutting out. Ive not put lexia back on to see what the OCR is now since I sorted her..

How about the relay for the intank pump? Dodgey connection to it or corrosion maybe?

Pump working OK, always fuel present. It starts and drives perfectly now so no fuel problem, just runs on after switch off and in limp home mode. When it had the other pressure regulator that wouldn't start when hot switch off and limp home were OK.

This regulator has the filter on it as did the original one, the one that cured all the faults except hot starting didn't. I might try removing the filter and re fitting it.
