DW8 Peugeot Partner

Post by evilally »

A work colleague was driving her Peugeot Partner 1.9D (DW8) and all of a sudden it started to lose power and belch black smoke on an uphill stretch. It then cut out completely and had to be recovered. Car was running perfectly up until this time. The car will start and idle but will cut out as soon as the accelerator is touched.

The garage are saying it's a fuel pump failure and will cost £1,000 to replace. Needless to say she is sceptical and has asked for a second opinion. I'm ruling out fuel starvation given the huge amount of black smoke. This would leave a timing issue or and air supply problem I would have thought? The garage have (apparently) checked the timing. The timing belt is original and is well overdue changing, the garage reports belt is cracked and in poor condition.

Could an EGR issue cause this?

On a 2005 car I would have thought total pump failure would be unlikely? Even if it is, a second hand unit from a breakers at around £100 would seem the sensible option? Although my feeling is the fault is elsewhere.

I would check the air filter and associated piping first, it sounds as though its being starved of air, try disconnecting the air pipe from the inlet manifold and see if it runs OK. Fuel pump failure is rare but possible. I would take it to a diesel specialist, they usually know what they are doing and are often cheaper than a garage.

I'd check the EGR valve is not stuck open too.

Thanks guys, apparently the garage has checked intake pipework. The garage says they can send it to a specialist, but as they are somewhat remote they are going to have to transport it some distance to do so. My work colleague has asked me to have a quick look over it first before committing, and I think a price of £1,000 is a bit silly.

What about stop solenoid, can we rule that out given it starts and idles?

My other thought is with the recent severe weather has is it gulped some water? :|

Solenoid will either be open or closed really, it will supply fuel (in a fashion) or not at all so I think its safe to rule that out. I guess it could be timing solenoid or suchlike but I don't think it can vary it enough to make it that bad, but I could be wrong.

Ok thanks guys. Bearing in mind that I will be in works clothes and have simple tools, is it possible for me to check the EGR? Without getting covered in gunk?

You can take a piece of clean tissue or rag, pull the vac pipe off the other end (not the egr end) by the solenoid , cover it with the tissue and suck the pipe. You should hear the EGR valve operating when you do this if it's not jammed.

Thanks Mike, good tip.

If the valve is stuck open, and this is causing the issue, would removing the pipe from the exhaust side be ok to prove this? If I ran the engine with the exhaust side disconnected (being wary of exhaust gas of course) it might breath some air direct from atmosphere, but at least the engine could run and it would prove that the valve is stuck?

Your van is probably fitted with the epic pump. No one seems to be able to repair or recondition them at a reasonable price. If it turns out to be the pump it can be replaced with a mechanical unit from an old xud. If you are changing to Bosch you will need the bracket and injector pipes as well. No need to change the injectors. I have done it 2 years ago on an expert van.
I went reading again.

There's a little vaccum operated throttle butterfly in the air intake that is quite common to stick on the DW8, although to a half decent garage this should have been easily diagnosed. The EGR pipe from the exhaust goes right into the inlet manifold at the front of the engine, nice & easy to access, disconnect it stick a bit of metal like a cut up aerosol can in between the join to temporary block it to see if it will rev ok.
Also confirm its not been filled with unleaded, stick your nose in the filler neck & check fuel receipts.

Very early DW8's (S or T plate 206's for instance) had a completely mechanical fuel pump although they are a bit thin on the ground.
