Hello all - ITS FIXED .

We removed the Comms 2000 unit (definitely broken), went to our local breakers , got a Comms unit off a Phase II Hdi hatchback which had the same part numbers as ours. We paid 15euros for the Comms unit and a silver-coloured drivers door handle (cause ours had been replaced with a black one at some stage).

15 euros , not bad , we were well pleased.

Came home , fitted the Comms unit, re-assembled everything, connected battery, turned ignition, Airbag light stayed lit for what seemed forever, then went out. WAHOO .

We have been struggling with this problem on and off since April, and finally, with the purchase of a Lexia, its cured.

Once again , many thanks to all on the forum who have given their help.

Great news! :) Glad it wasn't the air bag itself and that you were able to find a second hand Comms 2000 unit so cheaply. (New they are very expensive I believe)

When you say it was broken do you mean there was obvious physical damage, if not how did you determine that's where the fault was ?

Hello Mandrake.

Yep , physically broken.

The plastic block that pokes through the steering wheel and turns with the wheel was broken.

More than likely that when it had a bump the airbag went off and the previous owner replaced the whole steering wheel in a hamfisted manner.

You wouldn't believe how many times we have turned on and off the ignition just for the pleasure of seeing that airbag light go off.

Mind you, we did buy the car at a great price, but thats a very very long and convoluted story. But we paid 650euros for a Xsara Phase II estate Hdi 90 Exclusive.

We rebuilt the back axle (tube bearings and swinging arms) for 64euros, wing for 50euros, put 4 tyres on it, and with new rear pads it passed its CT.

BTW, our local scrap-yard has 9 Xantias in it, all lined up together in a row. If anyone wants any small parts that we could post, give us a shout.

Thanks again to all.
