In which case, could the cable have broken or rusted through? What about the other end of the cable - have you checked the cables at the gearbox end?

i checked the cables and no problem there all gears are working fine exept 3rd it just feels and sounds like normal but no drive

Can you feel any resistance when you try to engage 3rd?

Did you have an assistant to move the lever in and out of gear while you watched the cables? One of mine did the same as yours and looked good but the outer cable moved in and out of the crimp when going for the gear even though it felt tight when tugging on it.

would.nt this show up on all gears not just 3rd

Not necessarily, the pulling action and opposite pushing actions move the outer cable in and out so going for say fourth will put the cable back where it ought to be but going for third can dislodge it.

I have experienced this problem on a 406 in reverse gear, when the lever was moved to engage it the outer part of the cable moved as well so no engagement. The cure is to crimp the ferule onto the cable with a pair of molegrips, I did it about 3 years ago and its been fine since. You need to get someone to watch the end of the cables while you try to select the gear.
