Jeff/coastline - many thanks
Ensure all pressure is gone from rear suspension before further dismantling.
how? :) I remember the xantia has a 12mm bolt to undo ..,,

you have to work on radius arm under the car
does that mean the part about removing arm to the vice doesn't apply, or am I way off the mark,,

hi jeff,
thanks for the info, but it is the garage doing it,I wouldn't know where to start and don't have the tools even If I did.....It may come in just over 300 but that is the price they gave me, so 117 on the two repair kits and 180 on labour.....I am doing both sides because I thought it was coming from the n/s/r/ but I was getting out of the boot after fitting the cargo net and heard the same "crack" on the rear drivers side....I hope the car won't meet it's end too soon, the previous owner really has spent a small fortune on the car, I could post a pic of all the service history but there is so much......I genuinely think he may have known the battery was going, and the noise at the rear probably persuaded him to get rid and not spend any more on the car...... In the month before he sold it,he had a rear near side valve replaced and had the system refilled and bled at a cost of just under £400. and a month before he sold it,again, had two p7 pirelli tyres on the fromt and there is a brand new michelin tyre on the spare in the boot.....

The service history is more than I have ever had with any car,so,even though there are a few faults, parking sensors not working, third brake light not working, and rear wiper stopped working and was removed for mot, the car has been really well maintained and had lots spent on it.....And it's last full service was three months ago,all receipts for it.....and it's lovely inside, really like the car,so I hope it will last me a few years........just in case you haven't seen from previous posts, take a look at the car for yourself, gorgeous inside, few dents but I can live with that.....will report back after friday, that is when the car is going in for surgery :)...this is the link from where I won the car on e bay

I had all kinds of advice from Citroen "specialists", and dealers usuallu tellibg me my car was knackered. Went for a couple of years like that. In the end I found a garage who had done one before and voila a couple of hours and it was done. No hassle. So dont listen necessarily to the "specialists"

cheers boris, I don't think this guy is in any way a specialist........like earlier posts have said, he either didn't know what he was talking about, or didn't want to fix it,or both......hopefully,I will have news of a successful repair on friday night....fingers crossed... [-o<

There must be a connection on the ABS sensor - granted it's probably tucked away on top of the subframe, but it will be there somewhere - if you've a decent bench, then finding the connector must be worth the effort!

ok,
both radius arm bearings been replaced with repair kits.......price came in,including kits, at £323.52......... given that I have read it's a bit of a nightmare job, I don't suppose I can complain, just wish it wasn't so close to christmas....lovely to drive home without the banging and cracking all the time.....it's only been done today and I noticed when I got home, the rear suspension seems very high? not sure if it was always like this cos I never really bothered looking before, it drops down a few seconds after the engine switches off?? Anyway, I am now quite happy that, along with a new battery, the car will start of a morning and I now don't need to feel like the car is going to snap in half going over speed bumps.....lovely ride now... :P ...... just a quick question for the experts, I could have really done without spending that money on it until after christmas, would I have just done it extra damage given the horible noise it was making, and made the repair potentially more expensive? or could I have left it until after xmas?? doesn't really matter now, just interested, it is very nice to have got rid of that horrible noise :-D

What I was told and the reason the people said the car could be knackered, including the dealer who said they wouild not guarantee their work is because it has been known for the bearing to wear the hole bigger. If your car seems ok and the garage were able to fit this new bearing with no hassles and it fitted then it suggest you haven't doone this and it should be ok. Should be so fingers crossed it seems fine.

On most of the ones I have done the arm has been worn where the bearings have broken up but there has always been sufficient metal left to hold them in place, providing the inner face of the arm is not severly damaged, once the centre bolt is tight they are not going anyware.

As I was the first to warn you on the arms/bearings, I am glad that you have it seems been lucky and have had the best result possible with just a change of the bearing. Your luck has held well :)

When mine was done the bearing had worn / rippled the outer ring and hard to believe this caused so much clonking but its weight bearing. I could have continued driving around for a while I suppose but its a job that is tackled sooner rather than later as explained above.

I thought the same, was going to leave it until after christmas, but I guess it would only do more damage.....I didn't see anything of the arms,or the kits, the garage just said it was a bit of a pain to do,but never mentioned any further damage.......they said it was a bit of a mess, but they did it and the noise is cured....so, I got the car for 535, and have paid approx 400 on a new battery and radius arm bearings to get it right...... happy now,and confident about driving down town without hearing the dreaded cracking noise.....happy to be back behind the wheel of a C5 once again :-D

indeed. really good spec....mine is a 52 plate but was registered on jan 3rd 2003.....it pretty much has everything.....quite surprised that it doesn't have front fog lights as my last c5,was an 03 plate and had them, and this is the exclusive.........that said, it's great having things like the on board computer, electric seats, auto folding mirrors etc....the headlights are zenon and I can really tell the difference, brilliant white light, just thought it would have had front fogs......hope to keep this now for three years and upgrade to a newer C5 exclusive :-D
