Thanks myglaren, I think your right about my problem being the MAF sensor.
Previously I accidentally damaged one of my original MAF's wires and got a £30 ebay (chinese?) replacement which I suppose after 8 months has expired... any idea where I can get a decent replacement MAF other than the main dealer??
Chap in the garage said a local motor factor has them at £30 or £60, I dont know what the difference would be, both obviously much cheaper than main dealer..?

Why is there so much crud on it ??....went out and checked mine on the strength of that Photo, it was clean as a Nuns sheetsmyglaren wrote:
This was my MAF when it became unusable. The bead on the right is the temperature sensor.
Have you a picture of the Denso sensor - I think that this is the MAP sensor but my car is away at the NEC currently so can't check that.
When my MAF went down the diagnostics indicated a dud MAP sensor too. I was too stingy to buy one when I bought the MAF and it turned out to be a red herring, MAP is perfectly fine.
In your case it may not be of course.

Sucked in through the 'snorkel' when the wheel arch liner exploded.

I bought both of mine from the dealer, £135 each IIRC.Jeff wrote:See above post, any idea's please for replacement MAF sensor?
The current car did have a new replacement bought from eBay for around £85 but I was wary of it and swapped the (new) one from my estate before it went.
As far as I know it is still in it and going well - very well. The car is a wreck now but goes like the proverbial off the shovel, or did last time I drove it a few months ago.

Maf sensor it was. Went to scrappy for 2nd hand original car part, sprayed with cleaner & car back to normal.
On the lexia threw up fault codes: (1st session) maf and egr & (2nd session) maf, egr and air intake temp sensor (which myglaren helpfully pointed out was in the maf anyway).

Both mine are doing something similar, the 406 won't pull until it gets to 1800 rpm and C5 pulls OK but wont rev over 3000rpm, not that it bothers me a lot. I had thought I might swap the MAFs and see it swaps the faults.

I was lucky as paid scrappy a tenner after taking maf off myself, 2 minute job.
Ebay supplier is also kindly exchanging faulty maf I bought 8 months ago.
One thing I have learnt is that maf sensors should be cleaned with a spray, yearly best practice.
Pulls up hills now when before cogging down to second which is unacceptable for a 2lt engine...
