They are very good towcars indeed :-D Just you wait until you have a ton of caravan on the hook. Then you'll really see just how wonderful a Xantia is in towcar mode :-D

I towed a caravan for a long while using a 1.9TD and then a 2.1TD.

It was "Tow Car of the Year" in 1994.

Excellent :-D Seeing the brochure reminds me that there was once a time when the family car could tow a decent-sized 'van rather than the obligatory enormous Chelsea Tractor now seemingly required for the same job. A workmate is a keen caravanner and his towing vehicle is about the same size as an artic lorry tractor

The last few times I pulled into a campsite with the Xantia and a contemporary 'van on the hook I was made to feel most unwelcome from the snotty attitudes expressed by some of the 4x4 crowd and their mobile gin palaces

A 12 year old Xantia and an even older Ace Monza caravan just didn't cut it in their eyes.

My normal attitude in such circumstances came into play  ... One near neighbour was most peeved when he overheard me telling one of my kids that if you slightly rearranged the letters in the name of his caravan it became a Raily Banger...

Even now, whenever we see a Baily Ranger on tow we still have a little giggle and recall an excellent holiday when I taught the kids to sea-fish and they caught their first fish... And ate them :-D

Ha ha love the attitude Jim!

The towing limits are a bit on the safe side I think for family cars and as most holiday gypos ;) want a big can they need a vehicle with bigger towing limit. Mine was just under 2ton without loads of kit in it.

The last site I ever went to was sodden on all slots so the site manager told me to drive onto one and reverse across two others with the van. The next day I could see the faces of the other site dwellers but came into my own when a good few were struggling to get theirs out as their vans quickly sank into the pitches and their vehicles including soft readers got stuck. I helped an elderly couple and said no to further requests as I couldn't be bothered and had enough on packing our lot up with the ex doing her usual of sitting in the passenger seat with magazine...

I sill have the van but I highly doubt I'll ever use it again. Bad memories and all.

Here's a couple of pictures of the trailer, bought privately for the princely sum of £200 after the original buyer dropped out, because they couldn't get a towbar fitted..........

You only need the sheet at night so it's fine to use it on the trailer during the day. If it rains it gets washed..

Result 8-)

I'm wondering whether to bother with the tent and just skip in the trailer :-D

Seriously though, the Xantia threw her toys again and his morning on the way to work, bloody gearbox switch is driving me nuts   still only a couple of weeks until the "light guide nd in his own lifetime" AKA Sir Jim replaces it for me.

All the little tricks I've used before, like disconnecting the battery, haven't worked! So if it's not sorted itself out by the time I leave work, then it's the RAC for me. I know these boxes can be fragile and this one is currently stuck in fourth which of course means I'm going to burn the clutch out or worse.......

Roll on the National.......
