Don't need to fit washers with hids as they are only testable at MoT time if they were fitted as standard :)

If it happens again, Rather then scrolling right through all the gears and trying, try instead foot on brake, ignition on, enter code, then HOLD the key in the start position, then while you do that move the gear lever A LITTLE bit, like partly into R then back to P..

This could be a sign of slightly stretched OR out of adjustment selector cable. This telling the gearbox its still in R, there fore inhibiting the starter, that or a possibly bad connection on the starter relay.
Paul, this happened again and he I her day and I tried what you suggested....... nada, nothing, zilch  I ended up moving the gear 'lever' up and down the box 3/4 time before it would start. I'm thinking it's got to be electrical.........

Yesterday, I swapped the bulbs back to the original ones as the Xenon's I had in I wasn't happy with, plus they started blowing, so now I'm considering what the best option is, I have to decide if I want to go down the HID route, which means fitting washers, from scratch or whether to do.some other mod like maybe upgrading to candles. The lights.on a series.one car are extremely poor, it has got me thinking if there could be an LED option......... time for fleabay.........
It's the selector multiswitch on the gearbox. Fairly common and not too hard to change.

Thanks Chris, just need to get my hands on one now, I took the Xantia out this morning and it decided to be stubborn and sit in 3rd, nor would it budge, even with manually working the lever. So now I need to find a switch from somewhere........

Is this switch physically on the box?
Jim might still have a spare he could part with if Paul doesn't as iirc him had my box off me :)

Well, I'm beginning to wonder if it could be the gearbox switch, I'm pondering whether it could be the starter motor, I say this because I went out to start her today, I got the dashboard lights and a click but nothing!

After several attempts with the same result I had to give it a while whilst I took the C6 to the meeting I needed to attend. When I came back, I got in the XantiaV and she fire.up......... albeit with a bit of hesitation, first she clicked like before, second turn of the key saw her turn over and fire up!

Am I wrong in my thinking, I'm planning to.see if there's a loose connection on the wires tomorrow, I wasn't able to do it to d Ayers due to.time constraints.

What should I be looking for?

If the solenoid starts to stick on a starter then sometimes a good few goes can free it off and I suppose as the temp rises it could help ease the sticking issue.

Does the lexia when plugged in not show what position the gearstick is in which could help?

Unfortunately I have a "dodgy" lead, and haven't got round to replacing it yet, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy one, the trouble is that all the ones I've seen plug into the OBD and not the 20 pin........ wanders off to fleabay

Guys, I think I have two problems, one with the gearbox switch and the other with the solenoid, first problem though is to replace the faulty Leica lead, which I've ordered tonight. I definitely think the switch has gone as the car drove fine to work this morning, this afternoon coming home, decided that it wanted to to start off in first gear and not change up, if you then stop and move the shifter from drive to reverse there's this double thump, and again it happens from reverse to drive, then the car will be stuck in fourth......

The solenoid issue I need to read up on and then sort out the 'fix' whatever it maybe......

So if anybody knows of somebody that has the said switch, or has one that they are willing to part with it, then please let me know.

This Xantia is certainly testing you Steve, will you be bringing it to the Northern Rally or the C6?

The way I feel at the moment, with this car, I have to say I'm not sure, if I can't get it sorted soon, I'm REALLY going to lose my patience with it....... then anything could happen! I'm losing what bit of hair I had left......
