Ah yes. The engine is now in the car and after I realised I didn't plug in the double injection relay, she fired right up!!! I was absolutely thrilled, so much that I didn't do this -

The clutch is lovely and soft, just got a few silly little bits and pieces to sort out now. It's on the driveway which allowed me to put the Peugeot 605 in the garage ready for tinkering once the XM is done!

Surely though the 605 being the XMs more reliable and conservative cousin, once the fuel pump is fixed, nothing will go wrong with it

It's got it's two long runs in the calendar already, the CCC Midland Section Christmas meal and the Christmas markets in Lille, France.

I'd recommend Eurostar for the Lille christmas markets. I know it's a bit of a trek for him though. However, when we went in a group from work, this allowed the men to eat and drink pretty much all day, and the women to shop and look round the markets. A much better plan, I'm sure you'll agree.

Having been stranded by my own 605 the comment could be seen as reflecting personal doubt. I'm still uncomfortable taking it a long way.

I'll do a bit more investigation when time allows.

The XM is pretty much sorted apart from the exhaust, topping up of the gearbox oil and brake bleeding.

The exhaust is proving to be a bit of a sod, more specifically the cat to exhaust manifold bolts. Annoyingly I did fit the cat while putting the engine in to the bay but only did it up a couple of turns. All the wriggling about meant the cat fell off! I must have spent a good hour getting no where with this exhaust. The problem is access on the OS bolt. The car, cat and steering rack heatshield are all in the way. I've removed the stabilizer bars to see if I can wriggle the engine around, tried to get my hand around different ways but still can't sensibly get enough grip on the nut to turn it. The current line of thought is to try and remove the steering rack heatshield. I'm getting there! I've also ordered a new bolt kit from my local motor factors so the threads should be a bit cleaner.

Those bolts can be a areal battle Kev

A new set will make it easier though.

Makes you wonder if the people on the assembly line had three hands...

If they are the sprung type of bolt, I suspect there is some assembly line tool to compress the springs and make threading on the nuts easy. I have "walked" the assemblies together using sleeves of increasing length to pull the bolts tight.

more likely the exhaust is assembled to the engine before the bodyshell is lowered into place,

Cheers. I've sorted the exhuast now. The bolts from the motor factors were even shorter! I found a longer exhaust bolt in my stash from when I replaced the exhaust on the Xantia and it was just long enough for me to fit

Just got the ABS issue to sort now!
