Y reg should be all multiplexed, unless it was built before about March 2000.

Multiplexed ones have a BSI instead of the fusebox like your 1.8, and a COMM2000 stalk set.

They use only one sensor to control the fans, the water temp gauge on the dash and the engine fuel injection ratio. Earlier cars used three sensors separately for these purposes.

In your case, if the sensor is crook it will affect the temperature readings on the dash, the fuel economy and the fan operation.

economy seems fine, only driven it 1 time though, fan didn't kick in when the temp went high, temp gauge seems to work ok.

Before you start to rip the engine apart as it seems is always the first line of action
given by the 'experts see at what temperature the fan cuts in if at all.

Well, normally the gauge pointer when at running temp. will be at or very slightly before the centre
(middle) marker then will rise to somewhere below the third or 3/4 mark at that point the fan should cut in
sending the pointer back down to the centre again then switching off the fan and so on.
If it climbs above the 3/4 mark the fan should be running,

Having it hooked up to a lexia whilst driving and getting the issue should narrow down what it is. You'll at least be able to get the coolant temperature reading, and possibly whether the fans should be active or not.

You can see if there's any members in your area with a lexia here: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 19&t=29178" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

TU engines are rather common, and not expensive these days. Went into a LOT of PSA cars due to its long life from 1985 to around 5 years ago?

Unless it's a rather new TU3 motor, it will have the same underlying issue of a failing head gasket. It's not a big expense or particularly difficult to fix but there isn't any other way around the problems this repair addresses.
